I have to say, I do kinda find it a little cheesy when I see stuff like Weed and Doom written on amps and stuff. Mainly coz I kinda equate it with someone having Punk Rock scrawled on their guitar or something.

That said, the Dunwich amp with the Weed plaxiglass faceplate was seriously fucking cool!

And I don't even smoke.

Every time I see a pedal, or a guitar, or an amp, or a case with "WEED" on it, or a pot leaf, all I can think of is Jon Stewart popping up and saying "did you ever play a tubescreamer ... ON WEED??????".

Don't get me wrong, drugs are awesome and I have my favorites. But it never occurred to me to put a picture of a tablet with a funny picture punched into it on my guitar. Just seems to be a weed thing.

My problem here is how the entire doom scene has to attach references of itself to everything. Its not enough to just have amps or big muffs, no they have to be encrusted with wizards and potleaves and the word "weed". The shit just seems so hack to me. If I ordered a brand new expensive custom amp with the word "beer" written on it (i wouldn't) the impression anyone who saw it would get, if not that i was kindof a douchebag, was that i enjoy beer. When you put a psychedelic graphic with just the word "weed" on it noone thinks "gee i guess the dude smokes weed". We all know what we think is "oh hey theres another fucking doom guy". Why cany they do colorful surf graphics or pictures of vans like a reference to fu manchu??? No its always a wizard and its always a pot leaf.

Why does every black metal band wear corpse paint, all black clothes, gauntlets / bracers with spikes, and put out albums with logo's you can't read that look like tree roots and or pentagrams, and horrible production quality? Why does every crusty kid wear black stretch jeans sewn up even tighter with green dental floss, vests and butt flaps covered in patches, have dreadlockes, and eat a vegan diet? Why do hipsters need thick black glasses, a combination of a shaved head and a comb over, sweaters from the 80's and a holier then thou attitude? Cultural identity my friend. If you don't like it don't participate in it, but don't knock some one else for it just because you don't like it. Every "scene" or subculture attaches references to itself, that's apart of identifying yourself amongst millions of people in an overcrowded world.
