That one always gets me, then they claim they have pro gear and then list "Epiphone Les Paul, Boss DS-1 and Peavey Bandit" when you ask them what they are rocking. :excellent:

Another fun thing they fail to mention in the ad: Whether or not they have a place to practice.

I was gonna get involved with a guy who wanted to start a shoegaze/experimental project but then kind of stopped responding when he said he didn't have a reliable place to practice.

Even if it's an affordable pay-to-play space, ANYTHING is better than trying to get a bunch of people together without any place to practice.

I've actually met a few good people/players in the Musicians section of CL. You can usually weed out the assholes because of huge red flags in their posts (ala the original post). Another pet peeve I have is when the poster doesn't include any info in the ad. The least you can do is post what instrument you play, if you have a practice space, what style of music you play, your age and the age group you are looking to play with. The age thing is a big problem with me because in my age group (over 40), most people just want to play classic rock, blues, or be in a shitty tribute band. It seems like people who were into Gary Numan, Devo, Krautrock, and the 70's New York punk scene just vanished or OD'd.

i've been lucky with the Musicians section of CL in my city. i met a few good friends that way and i just start a band with someone else that i found through an ad on CL.

although, sometimes i wonder if any of the bands suggested in ads like the original post actually come to fruition. it could be hilarious.

exactly. i'm 56, and literally a generation older than e.g. the MBV fan base, while the closest thing to interesting people in my cohort want to do is jam bands. oy...i was doing that shit when it wasn't cool, and i'm kind of tired of it now. maybe if i could get them to cross Phish with Radiohead. i pretty much have to find a group of younger people and get them to be Comets on Fire to my Ben Chesney.

GardenoftheDead wrote:There's this one ad that's been posted like five times in Vegas from some punk rock neckbeard going "STANDARD TUNING ONLY. L2P YOUR FUCKING INSTRUMENT."

But really, from the other side of this if you can only describe what you're playing in terms of # fret # string, instead of actual notes. I don't want to play with you. I prefer standard, tuning, but I'm willing to be flexible, but DON'T YOU EVER FUCKING TELL ME BOTH GUITARISTS NEED TO BE IN THE SAME TUNING. We can both be in two absolutely insane tunings that are different from one another and make shit work, but too many CL d-bags around here are like "you gotta play in drop A or else, and you gotta be a D-bag also"

Calling serious musicians tired of the same old same old (Rochester NY)
OK HERE IT IS....I am forming a band that I will be the leader of.
I play rhythm guitar, I am NOT a lead player. I need a drummer, bass player, lead guitar and/or a keyboard, and preferably a female lead singer that can `sing the blues`. I am not a young'in. I am a young 60 year old. I don't really care what your age is. I need stability in your life.
It will be a benevolent dictatorship.
Here's why, most bands that I have been in have no `leader`, everyone works together as a team. Sounds great doesn't it? But after a while nobody agrees, or some say nothing about what they want and leave, or one person `takes over` to the resentment of everyone else, or time goes on and no real progress is made because there is no plan, just a lot of desire `to make it`. Sound familiar?
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
In my band, I will make the decisions after hearing all points of view. I will have a working plan to follow to achieve the goals that we as a group decide on. I will keep us on track. I will assign duties to band members that fit their talents, be it music arrangement, marketing, etc. I will have the last word on all disputes.
Here's is what I need from you:
1. A commitment to practice on your own to learn new material and keep fresh on old material.
2. A commitment to making the bands practice sessions on time.
3. A desire to play out and truly entertain.
4. Willingness to accept that the buck stops with me.
5. The understanding that a band is like a marriage, respect, communication, commitment, willingness to compromise are all essential to making it work.
6. Musical ability.
7. Stability in your life.
With all that being said, what I envision is a Classic Rock, R&B. Covers from Petty, Springsteen, Santana, Tedeschi, Beatles, Clapton, Adele, Church, Although versatility in all genre of music is essential to make it marketable to the masses, Oldies, some country rock, some chart stuff. I see us playing some bars, charity events, festivals, especially in the beginning to get us exposure, then morphing into a party band once we get a reputation of sorts.
If you see value in this approach and want to talk further, reply to me and if you like, give your Name and phone # and I'll call you back.

Ya' Know, if all I wanted to do is play in a cover band and jam on I/IV/V and all I had to do was practice the material and show up time; I'd probably respond to this ad. I had better get paid though because this sounds more like a job than it sounds like fun.
