This. Record store day this saturday will consist of at least 6 hours crate digging, cannot wait
Also, I find vinyl kinda forces you to listen to the album the way it was intended because you cant just press a button to skip songs. Definitely a better listening experience
For me CDs are useless now cos I'll just rip it onto the computer and put it on an ipod for the car

I'm actually going to be completely broke for Record Store day.
Also, not to get too pedantic/esoteric, but any album that has a song longer than the ~20 minutes that a record side will hold means that you
can't listen to it the way it was intended. The same is true for tapes. And, of course, there's no one forcing you to push the skip button.
The benefit to vinyl, I think, is that it encourages an active listening experience precisely because it isn't set and forget--it keeps the music in the forefront, rather than acting as wallpaper.
Right. The listening experience is kind of like a ritual, and event in itself.
I think clunky analog media and its flaws/maintenance requires an interactive, curious user to yield the maximum enjoyment...in general.
And there's the intangible appeal of watching records or reels spin as the music jumps out of the speakers...
Little things like that can make for some real stop-and-smell-the-roses moments.
Like the fact that the recordings become personal as the records wear...and you start to associate the pops & ticks with *your version* of the song, even listening for them, and ultimately missing their absence when hearing *someone else's version*

Oh, yeah I totally agree. I'm more referring to intended listening as listening to the complete work in order. It's usually a pause between tracks anyway so no major interruption.
Obviously nobody has to skip songs but when it's so easy to do a lot of people will just fall into the habit. I've found that buying an album on vinyl which I've already listened to always makes me appreciate it in a lot more detail.

Totes. I'm of the opinion more bands should do the Kyuss Sky Valley thing--two or three songs per track.
Of course, it would help if more bands made records that I liked as much as Sky Valley.

Yah, vinyl rules. I work at a record store in Chicago called Reckless Records. The only limit on what I can have is cost, considering I can pretty much get my hands on anything that comes in any of the four Reckless locations unless it's already been reserved for someone else, as far as collecting goes. It's an addiction.

Also to add to the collecting/bin searching aspect. You'll find stuff for a dollar or two that you would never ever ever ever ever ever buy or even look at unless it was for the fact that it's on vinyl in the $1 bin. Although a typical record is about $6, the range is pretty un real. the cheapest stuff in the store I work at is the 25 cent 7" bin, the most expensive thing, I think. Is this Cat Stevens Box Set 1 of 500 for $175, used. Individual records can go up to around $30 or $40 for higher priced stuff, there's a copy of Freak Out by Frank Zappa for $40. After that there is a copy of Paul's boutique by the Beastie Boys for $75, an original. The majority of stuff I buy is $15 or less although every now and again some thing does come along.
When I first started buying records I bought alot of "classic records" and stuff that I already knew. After a few months of buying every week I slowed down and buy about once a month.

The hunt is one of the best things about vinyl IMO. There's nothing like finding record stores when you're on the road and browsing some completely new territory. It's pretty cool seeing the difference of music taste in different places...
As far as collecting goes, I have a few special ones (entire GY!BE catalog and print #4 of their new album, some original Beefheart, Holger Czukay, etc.), but the rest is just a bizarre smattering of what looks interesting. Lots of impulse buys with ridiculous covers.
I don't think stereo systems are worth the crazy $. Mine is an old Sony turntable that I rigged up to be powered with a phone charger, Panasonic preamp from the 70's, and some old home theatre speakers. It does the job

I've listened to some on nice equipment before and decided that I don't see the big deal.

man i used to live eat and breathe vinyl. mostly sampling, but part of sampling is listening!
i used to spend my food money on records cuz making beats is way better than eating.
its been a while since i've really gone digging at an actual store.
now i just go thru the piles and piles and piles of records i've acquired over the years.
one time the whole thing crashed down on me. it was kinda scary!
sampling changed my whole perspective on music. like wow theres a shit ton of really good bands that are long forgotten or were never heard about that don't get any cred compared to the beatles, zepplins and floyds of the world. but they made some really dope music.
also helped me appreciate lots of different styles of music that i never would have listened to.

Also, hunting for records was way more fun before the internet took hold and everyone found out what everything was actually worth.

Man, I have LOADS of vinyl. Most of them are powerviolence, crust, grindcore, or death metal. Loads of classics from the parents, too.
I bought new speakers recently and they sound fucking amazing. Vinyl has never sounded so good to me. I'm using them with equipment from the '70s.
