All about application. I honestly think knowing your fret board, theory and ability to jam with anyone is what counts here. Once you have the musical knowledge/intuition down, any effect will sound good if done right.
With that said, dat vintage stringy fun time fuzz peeps be talkin about.

I always like my afro chops with a healthy dose of Randys Revenge.
You could also try the approach of just turning up your amp because you are playing outside in the sun, like here:

Or get your Wah skills up to date:

I'd like to add in that in my experience it's usually useful to use the rhythmic / percussive properties of your guitar as in lots of palm muting, basically not trying to get as much sustain out of the guitar as one normally would (at least for quite some African and Eastern styles).
Oh, and lots of (major) triads too, not only used as chords but also for the melodies (especially in African music).
Quite a few African songs are based on the old I - IV - V - IV progression, so you already have the three major triads there.
I find the chorus sound they usually use to be quite shallow and hollow sounding, almost like a faux twelve string or something, I guess a bit of dirt (overdrive or guitar volume down on fuzz) and some reverb (before overdrive / fuzz possibly) or maybe a slapback delay could help you get even closer to some sounds.
