Exactly this

i haven't played many, I own a Heliotrope, I used to have a Whetstone and I messed aroundwith Ring Thing for a while

from these three, the Ring Thing was the best... I find that I probably need some kind of control for Treble, because both Whet and Helio are a bit dark for my taste

still, Helio is cool as hell

For sure. In what I've found, the slower sweep sounds pretty great...It starts to get more into noise pedal territory when you make it phase-y with the rate cranked.
There are definitely a decent amount of usable phaser emulation here, though!

I've got a Copilot Planetoid on the way in - will demo it as soon as it arrives. Was tossing up between that and Randy.

Never tried Moog, but I love Randy's Revenge.
Also... Dr. Sci Cosmichorus with a fast rate is quite good as a ring mod.

the thing about the Moog is that its sound quality is a love-it-or-hate-it affair (which i suppose is a ring mod thing in general LOL). it has a grittier, more aggressive sound in general than the other major ring mods, probably because it has multiple potential boost stages. as such, it or any other ring mod will work very differently in different chains. i have too many things that break up already to be able to use the Moog...the fuzz array already wants to crush anything else in the chain, which i only avoid by careful pedal arrangement (i.e most everything has moved back down past the fuzz array so the filter and mod frequencies don't just get mashed.

This is very true. The Moog is super aggressive if you don't spend a good amount of time figuring out the best spot for it. I stuck it around the middle of my board to avoid having so much crush going on. For me it's Fuzz/Dirt>Trems>Moog>Verb/Delay. I guess it sounds about as organic as a ring mod can there.

best I ever had was the montreal assembly one,
I would buy it again if it ever turns up on BST
think I have owned the same one twice
I am not a ring mod person but that was awesome

the ringmod setting on my boss ME33 was probably my second favorite

Yo Ben if you want a PCB to make your own mtl assy ring mod I'll give you one. Scott is super cool and gave me some. I'm super lame and haven't finished mine yet. I need to order a couple ICs for it.

Oh yeah. And my answer? Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai in reverse mode. I like it better than my friends Moog, but I dunno if anyone else would really be there with me on that one..

I WILL NEVER MISS A RING MOD THREAD AGAIN. :omg:

Frostwave Blue Ringer v2 is still my favoUrite. Randy's Revenge close second place, and better for live/board stuff since it is easier to dial in.

The EHX Freq. Anal. is fucking excellent. No tremolo but for the price it can't be beat. I have never used the Moog but some day I shall.

Copilot makes good noisy/weird ones. Oddly enough I prefer my ring modulation clean, but these are definitely worth looking into.

-Have wanted a Moog ring mod for awhile but never tried one

-The ring setting in my Whetstone is pretty cool but only seems to work in a narrow range before it starts to self-oscillate

-Just ordered a Randy's Revenge as it seems like it might behave better with other pedals than the Moog. I may still try the Moog at some point with a Juno106 keyboard :)

I've had a Randy's Revenge for about a year now, love the damn thing. Super easy to dial in and I can do CV to my Faye Sing. Set the frequency toggle to lo and get some square wave phasing tones!

while there are other pedals that more extensively cover the ring modulator ground, blackout effectors sibling does a pretty darn good ring mod.
