I always get labeled as a toughguy.
Not as in a bully, but as in take no shit from anybody.
My good friends are a mix of nerds and rockers.
But the other 'toughguys' are degenerates who can hardly speak coherently.
So I guess I'm unique like that.

I went to a small private school, and we wore uniforms. My social group is just generic though. I played sports year round, but I wore laceless vans with nike no show socks. When we had casual days and my normal wardrobe was a lot of hurley (which now has gone the terrible way of affliction other tough guy clothing brands) as well as like Coheed and Cambria and Say Anything band shirts. I usually just wore a pair of Jordan basketball shorts and some form of band or skater shirt or the good ol' fruit of the loom black T.
I guess I never really had to think too much of what I wore or how I appeared. Some nights I would go to a party with the "popular" kids and the next night I was hosting a Magic the Gathering tournament in my basement. 90% of the time I was just in my basement playing Star Wars Galaxies or Warcraft with my guitar on my lap. On the way to basketball games, I would be huddled in a back seat of the bus playing Fire Emblem on my GBA. I guess I'm another case of youthful identity confusion.
As far a cliques went, I never had a real steady group of friends. I didn't eat lunch in the cafeteria, I typically ate in my government teachers room, along with my best friend and another kid that had downs syndrome.

i've never been in any tribe, i see various outsider tribes, but they look inside to me.
i would feel self conscious to dress up in any kind of tribe uniform, like a cat dressing up as a dog and then sneaking up amongst them and pretending to fit in.
woof

It was a school in MIssissauga called Cawthra Park.
It sucked. I wasn't even in the arts program!
What school did you go to? I know you're roughly my age and from the GTA.
We might know some of the same people.
And I think it is. That's probably a better description for my friend group in high school.

I only finished high school last year so the memory is still vivid..
Selective agricultural boarding school
There were only like 5% white people so we pretty much just grouped together even though we had nothing in common. We had to wear crappy uniforms every day but I'd just have ridiculous haircuts and piercings to piss off the conservatives.
We never had 'jocks' or 'metalheads', only study-nerds (the majority) and everybody else.
Slept in class all day erry day
It was a forgettable time

High school? Nerdy misfit. Hung with the burnouts, the honor roll kids, the D&D kids, the drama club kids and the alterna kids. But it was a small school. Not too hard to cross social lines. Only groups I didn't jive with were the hardcore jocks, wanna-be rednecks, serious hellraisers and general douchebags.
College? Misfits and arty kids, mostly. Though we had a pocket of friendly jocks who were good peeps. Always handy to have at least one friend on the football team...

Hung around with the skate punks and raver kids. never really fully committing to either. had some rivet head/gamer friends for a while. none of it really stuck. I still don't have many close relationships to this day. I hang out with people and def have friends but I've never really had like a "group" of friends. closest thing I had were bandmates. And my dog, but she's a little hipster asshole.

I agree, the individual I spend the most time with is my cat. Other than that, my roomate, who is also my bassist that I have known for 16 years. I really only have 2 other good friends, not including my girlfriend, that I met in college. My current guitarist and my old campus roomate, who is now in China.

I did sports growing up, so kept doing it through most of high school, but I never hung out with the jocks. I was mostly a stoner/grunge/rocker dude, but also a nerd. Those were the two main groups I hung with. So I had long greasy hair, wore flannel, played football and got straight As. Pretty tragically unhip, in the least ironic way possible.
