Honestly, if anyone is really interested in the real answer, 21+ is done because it's easier for a bar to handle a 21+ show than an 18+ show. With 21+, you only have to card once, at the door. With an 18+ show, you need to card people at the door, and then card them again at the bar. It's a fucking hassle for bartenders to have to card each person as they're ordering drinks, it slows down the bar service.
I understand this is just a rant thread, but I felt the need to inject a little bit of rational explanation into the conversation.

apparently you work at a bar where they've never heard of permanent markers.

I don't actually work at a bar, I'm just saying that I've heard that excuse before from bar owners. As for the marker thing, I've only seen that done at like bigger concert halls and shit. Most smaller bars around here I've been to don't do that.

Why can't they just lower the drinking age back to 18?

I played with my first real band a Finish tour in the nineties, from a rock bar to another and where ever we got a gig, when I was only sixteen. One night I realized the handicapped age when we were returning form a pizzeria to the venue just before the show and the bouncer wasn't going to let me in. The older guys had to go tell the owner to let me in from the back door, where he apologised and handed me a full bottle crate of beer and said he knew all the time, winking his eye.
I tried to get to my old bands a few gig a year where the minors can also come (here in Finland, in some bigger places there is a minors area in the venue, where they don't serve alcohol) and I've got very good experience about meeting the Youngsters after the show. HOWEVER it has been at times really hard, to get to do that kind of gigs for a ...show/performance oriented black metal act, when government and city representatives are at the same time trying to make sure - as the promoters said - the venue is safe for everybody and the show's not harmful for minors

safe? When it never was much safer for even us either!

Just HOW can one even suppose a black metal band to do that? Stupid retarded fuckers.
But yeah. It can be a pain in the ass, I understand. I say the mixed audience is the best, especially if they know what they are about to get and don't go whining to mommy afterwards. Especially at the crazy rock festivals.

Yep. I never understood how anybody can be given the legal right to drive a car - that can actually KILL people - before they are even considered old enough to have a beer at the pub. That doesn't make sense, does it!

Let's please avoid the subject of what does and what doesn't make sense in today's world ^^'

But how are venues about allowing bands with underage members playing there?
That's my concern, considering my bassist is 17 and my drummer 20. (I'm 22 so whatevs)

You don't have to tell them Your band members age, don't You, so as long as You drink in the backstage and don't send the band minor to the counter You should be on the safe side.

And don't let the bass player go to pizzerias nearby and come back too late when the doors are already open for the audience.

all the small venues (aka all of them) here do that. its not that big of an investment for a stamp pad and permanent marker.
maybe bar owners around you are just kinda dumb or somethin

Alternately, honesty is sometimes best. You can talk about it with whoever does the booking at a venue.
If they like your band (and get along well with you) and your band has a decent draw, it doesn't much matter.
As long as your underage bandmates don't do anything stupid, like trying to drink at the venue or showing up for soundcheck already drunk or something, you should be fine. I guess you guys've got to prioritize. Do you wanna build a good relationship with venue bookers and get to play awesome shows or do wanna fuck around and have a good time (or possibly not such a good time)? If playing shows is important to you, fuck around on your own time and be semi-serious about the shows. You guys can party & bullshit anytime. Shows is fo' real.
