I don't understand all this bass player hatred. It's not like this is a new thing. Some bands have a bassist as a front man. So fucking what? Type O Negative, Tool (come on don't kid yourself we all know it's true), Rush, Pink fuckin Floyd...the list could go on.
I think guitar players get butt hurt when a bassist shows them up and can play with more range than them. I say, fuck off and learn to play better if you're that offended. Fucking guitar playing WHORES!!!!
MM is a bassist though...
But don't get me wrong I just don't like wanking, doesn't matter the instrument.. and by wanking I don't mean soloing or technical playing.. what I call wanking is when it starts to sound like someone practicing scales or playing "hot licks" in the middle of whatever you are playing, it makes you sound like a clown.

I'm with MM. As a musician in general, not just a bass player, I fucking hate wanking. If you aren't adding to the song SHUT UP!

By the way, I agree with this too. The only thing I was disagreeing with was the whole "bassists should stand in the back and 'lock in with the drummer'" thing. There's no particular reason why the guitar can't be the one locking in with the drummer and playing rhythm while the bass plays a lead, or a counter-melody, or be playing off-time from it altogether.

I’ve always been in favor of the bass playing the melody and/or chord progressions and a good bass lead is a pleasure to listen to.
In fact I once got fired from a country band for playing the melody to an old Hank Williams song.
They wanted the same 4 notes over and over and over….
I was just ranting on wanking.
Try listening to 3 hrs of Yengwie, or Keith Emerson or Victor.
