I am in NC right now, I come here pretty often and always do a day trip to Asheville. It does have a hippy, artistic vibe. Great food. I don't know about the "scene" though.
I forgot about Savannah. A lot of cool stuff in that little town.
Maybe Gainesville, FL. It does have a sense of community, a lot of cool stuff happens. The music scene is supportive at several venues. At other venues, a certain promoter has clout. The promoter has there own venue now too. I have played at that venue but it is pretty cliche-ish. Gainesville supports a lot of different music as a whole but isn't what it was in the 90s. Remnants of the old punk scene, lots of hipsters, old punks playing folkier music, a healthy electronic scene, some good DIY Hip Hop, and a bit of metal of various sub-genres. Doom could be embraced here.

I hate to admit it but Portland, Oregon is a great place for a musician. We have a LOT of music stores and there are still clubs that are good to local bands. The only drawbacks are the job market and the weather if you like to bitch about that type of deal.

Some of the classic places have closed (Paris Theater, Pine Street, B complex) but a few are still open. Years back people just skipped us and either went to Seattle or California, but now people actually make an effort to play and stop here. Even the college campus areas have little music scenes going on.

I would not recommend the suburbs as the majority of people who don't live in the metro area and snobbish assholes.

I dropped out a while ago and now I am a 30 year old fuck who plays bass on occasion and Star Wars obsessively ;)

so what the fuck do I know eh?

gunslinger_burrito wrote:I figured I'd ask around here, since one of my main reasons for asking is the music-related. I'm born and raised in Northern Colorado (Ft.Collins) and I have that "need to get the hell out" syndrome something bad. I've tried moving northwest (Olympia, WA, specifically) but I ran out of funds, plus "life" happened and I decided to try Denver, which was equally fruitless. I really want to start some kind of doom/noise type of band, but I'd like to do my research enough to not have a completely shitty time wherever I end up. Someplace with a supportive music scene and people that would appreciate that particular side of music. I really don't want to sound like I'm setting my sights high, I'm realistic about goals and expectations, BUT, I live in a town where dubstep is basically considered "noise 'music' ."

I know somewhere on here is a "where are you from" thread, but I thought I'd toss this one in and see what turned up. Thanks, dudes!

whoa. i moved to ft collins for like 5 months for school, and kinda didn't like it a whole lot. I did like boulder a whole fuck of a lot. i live in the chicago suburbs, where i was born and raised, and for noise stuff, idk i mean the more you go into the city, the more "weird" music gets accepted but in the burbs its all metal or you have to be a girl with an acoustic.

nyc is super expensive, but there's a little bit of everything here, and always something to do.

The Boston/Providence area is cool, places will typically be down for that type of music. It is pricey, but less so than NYC.

Ft.Collins is an EASY town to live in, once you get a job. I'm definitely spoiled as far as how close by everything is, but then again, there isn't much of anything that interesting to me right now.

I should probably have mentioned that I like to be able to bike around town if possible, which, of course, makes me sound like I AM from Ft.Collins.

Thanks for all the input so far! I've never really been to the East Coast or parts of the South, and have been wondering what it's like.

My 2ยข:

Asheville and Savannah are both cities I seriously considered moving to. Since I'm more used to the larger cities of the Northeast Megalopolis, I found them both to be too small for me. While there were ultimately things that I loved about 'em, I couldn't really see myself living there. They're both kinda touristy in a way that's way more noticeable than much larger cities. As for Asheville being "hippie", it definitely is, but not much more so than some other cities I've visited. (Maybe I'm secretly a hippie sympathizer?) In regards to Savannah, SCAD made it seem like a college town. Which is fine if you're into that, I wasn't. They're nice cities for what they are, but they weren't for me. They both have great, if small, music scenes.

My advice to you is to travel, if you can, to as many cities as possible as you're interested in moving to. Try to spend a few days in each to get a feel for 'em. I think that's the best way to decide where you wanna move to. And keep asking yourself lots of questions along the way.

I wish I had the money and time to visit more of them!

Also just thought of this. I love the ocean. Any place that puts me closer to it automatically gets points. Probably why I liked Seattle so much when I visited there.

Austin... Sometimes it is too cool for school but I really can't think of anywhere else I'd wanna be... Half the people I know are talking about moving to CO so you could trip everyone out and move from CO to TX... And you can ride your hippy bike anywhere...

Stamford, CT maybe? It can be a somewhat shady city, but I think it's large enough to take up your time, and businesses are moving there like crazy. Definetely a city that'll be known by more people in 10-15 years.
Good restaurant scene
45 Minute train ride into NYC
Beautiful suburban areas right outside the city if you want the pro's but not the con's of urban living
Borders Long Island Sound

I'd avoid the midwest and south... Earth is making it very clear it has had enough of our shenanigans. D :

I mean, I love the bigger cities down here. They're like little oases of culture in a sea of rednecks. But, you know, tornadoes.

I was hoping one of the St. Louis guys would chime in. Last time I was looking for cool music scenes, that seemed to be the haps.
