Sure. but a bunch of my flies died because my drafty old student flat was too cold for them.
I did a bunch of this stuff in the kitchen last summer with my 5 year old -- we raised the flies and I showed him how to tell the different larval stages apart under the microscope, how to tell males from females, and where all the parts come from in the larva to adult transition. We let the extra ones loose in the compost.
