they're awesome, but in Cali it IS more of a younger band/college thing. i played a buttload when i was a kid, i've done a few backyard parties in the last few years... but when we were kids it was play at somebody's house at least every 3 or 4 months.

while the US is freaking huge, in the more populated urban areas (i.... assume? i've only lived here) you usually get a half hour or so if you're super noisy before the cops show up. but it's a blast.

kinda miss 'em.

Went to a lot of really crappy high school punk house shows when I was in high school myself. They are some of the most fun. The best ones were in basements, some good ones in garages too. Been to singer songwriter ones when I was at uni in upscale apartments. Cops bust some of them. Sometimes there is a citation, but usually a warning to stop. At least half of them were charity donation shows. "My mom/classmate has cancer/needs surgery, could you donate $5?" kind of thing. I always thought that was awesome.

My favorite moment was when my best friend and I were documenting a house show with our camera, and the cops showed up.
Friend: "Aw, sweet the cops are here. Shoot the cops."
*gives friend a WTF look*
Friend: *motions to camera* "Come on, shoot the cops!" *looks at police and realizes what he is saying* *jumps over a bush*

The house shows where I live only happen because the bands that are playing usually have no other place to play, as in High School bands and usually college bands too. Especially when a band records an albumn, it basically the only way (they know how) to sell CD's is by having a show in which they play all of thier music and then selling the CD's. Not that house shows are bad or anything, just not my first pick for a venue. And yes much more a relaxed party vibe, also much more informal, and usually fun.

i havent played a house show in moons but they were super fun at the back of my house i have a small warehouse type building that was part of the property before it got leased out
it was pretty much our venue it could legit fit like 500 people in there and we would throw shows and sell hooch till the bible bashers across the street would call the po po
i would even see my neighbors inside chatting away and i didnt even tell them

Really though, come to America, do a house show tour. In Denton, there used to be so many house "venues" that they'd have specific houses for certain types of music. The Majestic Dwelling of Doom was for the heaviest bands, the House of Tinnitus was for noise bands, etc. Sadly most of those went by the wayside, but still, houses abound.

Yes. You should. And reach out to every ILF-er, and see if you can book the first International ILF House Tour!

Donovans right. House shows are a chance to thrash shit and have a great time. They are especially awesome if you dont actually know the person who owns the house. Through various bands and projects ive played my fair share of house shows and they are always the most awesome shows you end up doing. It usually goes several ways

A. YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE HOUSE

1. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Play totally drunk. Cops come. OK OFFICER WELL TURN DOWN. Drink for 10 mins. Crank amps and continue. Cops either come or dont. Who gives a shit at this point just make sure gear is in cars. Get laid. Puke. Bail.

2. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Some asshole named Tim whos gf you fucked a couple times but didnt really care about or anything so its totally outrageous that he cares shows up. Starts shit. Gets ass kicked by like 20 ppl who are screaming TRUE TIL DEATH BRO. Play but with additional song "tim is a faggot who just got his ass beat and also i fucked his girl". Keep drinking. Tims girl shows up mad that everyone beat his ass. You end up fucking her again. Bail before she finishes douching or whatever girls do in the bathroom after you nut in them.

3. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Start playing and shit gets thrashed. House a wreck. Cops coming. Grab gear/liquor/drugs/sega saturn and bail.

B. YOU DO NOT KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE HOUSE

1. Show up with gear. Set up. Drink for an hour or three. Loot bedrooms when nobody is looking. Play WAY too loud. Who gives a shit if cops coming, not your house. Talk some bitches into leaving with you. Steal liquor/poptarts. Bail

2. Shit is hostile but show up anyway. Drink, start playing. People are dicks so start swinging headstock wildly taking random chicks/bros the fuck out. Throw bottles/mic/full cans of beer/tvs into audience. Fight. Grab shit. Bail

3. Show up with gear. Get waaaay too drunk. Start being a dick. Swinging headstock, crosschecking ppl with guitar. Puke on some girl. tear holes in wall with bridge of guitar. finish playing. Gear in car. LETS KEEP PARTYING. Turn living room into wrestlemania. Start lighting bacardi 151 on fire. Light kitchen on fire. Bail.

New Years noise house show turned into guy who owned house playing a set, getting wasted, and throwing the table with all of his gear on it across the room before hysterially laughing for about 5 minutes. Golden

This is the golden rule. As the band all you have to worry about is your gear. And getting laid. Other than that...uuuuh...skate or die?

him = more pussy, less quality selection
me = less pussy, more good humpin's/actual relationships

House shows exist in my town because it's a great way to play to others without the bullshit a bar or club give. House shows I've been to are either
A) really chill, everyone's drunk and smoking and having a good time.
B) busted right away, the cops showed up and stayed until everyone left (really, small town cops are BORED).
C) the one band/group of drunks fights everyone and steals beer/food, making people leave.

Mostly, house shows are group A, but group C is the worst. Parties won't happen at that house for while/no more.
