lol. for reals. that's actually my favorite part of Jenkinson's career. love that song, that whole album is fucking AMAZING.

IDM is one of the most pretentious names for a genre of music EVER. it stands for Intelligent Dance Music. back in the day Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) was trying to coin the phrase Brain Dance for all the skittery electronic stuff that was coming out (and he was in the forefront of) that sounded like a perversion of dance music to most people. did not catch on. thankfully. but at least it was a well intentioned name instead of something that implies that anything that's NOT IDM is UNintelligent by definition.

annoying, but that's a recognized term for stuff like Aphex, Squarepusher, Bogdan Racynski, Venetian Snares et al. TECHNICALLY all the shit Skrillex does is just IDM in a somewhat more popular acceptable format.

Ah!

(well Google to the rescue,...IDM = Intelligent Dance Music,...I thought it was like an artist or something,...fucking acronyms).

I dig Tom Jenkinson,...but back in my formative years,...that shit was pussy music. Again I've outgrown that shit.

This is my favorite song of his,...but I can't seem to find it anywhere other than on Soundcloud.

I've got a bunch of Aphex Twin to check out on mah Hard Drive.

Would Amon Tobin be lumped into the IDM crowd?

i would put Amon in there. he's ridiculous in what he can do with samplers.

i got to see The Jenk live one time in SF. was awesome but pissed me off because HE DIDN'T PLAY BASS. he ran all the songs from Go Plastic before it was released where most of the tracks in each song were dry and he did the effects live. cool as hell.

but i wanted to see him play bass damnit.

Hail to the Thief, Amnesiac, and In Rainbows disc 2 are top 3. Bjork's videos could replace my porn collection especially from vespertine (pagan poetry!!!) and homogenic. Not to mention she has a live at an opera house video that just shows how much more amazing she is.

IDM = Intelligent Dance Music

The most annoying condescending genre title ever. To imply that any other form of music is unintelligent.

Which is how I felt about radiohead. Being in art school it was hell having to hear about them constantly by every fucking film student.

then I actually got into shoegaze and post-rock type stuffs. gave OK computer a chance 10 years too late and have never looked back :)

lol. yeah. that's kinda where my disinterest in certain (maybe awesome) bands stems from. not liking the people or kind of people that would not shut up about how TOOLHEADGARDENVANA ARE THE BEST THING EVER SO ORIGINAL SO DEEP SO LBALHALSDHFFFHFHHFASDFASDFHBBBBGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

........... and it's funny, 'cause any board dealing with electronic music or skittery noise there's invariably a thread from somebody just getting into Aphex/Pusher/VenSnares/Autechre/Funkstorung/Whoever saying "i like the music, that is the most insulting name for a genre...."

which is always met with a "YEP. none of us like it either. it's stupid. but it's what stuck."

Well,...let's be honest here,...some of the manufactured dance music out there is pretty mundane and boring. More suitable for High School Dances, Jock Jams CD and to be played during stoppages of play at a hockey/basketball/football game (That song Sandstorm comes to mind,....I hate that song). I'm not saying that the producers that came up with these songs aren't talented or at least know fundamentals of making music,...and if it works for them that's fine,....but I will say that that type of music is on a base level when compared to Squarepusher and Amon Tobin. I'm sure a lot of the watering down process has to do with marketing and the producer's goals as well.

I didn't get any sort of pretentiousness with the Phrase Intelligent Dance Music. In fact I knew as soon as I read the phrase exactly what the intention was for adopting such a title. You hear the phrase "Intelligent Dance Music" and you immediately know that it has the potential to be more interesting and better thought out than that other dance music. So in that regard I think it's actually quite elegant.

RE: Fanbois ruining music. I've heard this a few times from bandmates, and I've probably said it myself...that the obsessiveness or the general annoying-ness of a certain group's following turns them off to the band itself. I usually tell people who say that, that you really can't fault the band for that. They have literally no control over what fans are going to do (Just ask Dimebag) and how seriously they are going to take the. I would say that most bands/artists privately scoff (as they are lining their wallets) at over-obsessive fans.

I guess what I'm saying is that if the music sucks then there is a legitimate reason not to listen to a band,....and if the fans suck then you have a legitimate reason not to go to that band's show.

Of course you have special cases like ICP in which the Music and the Fans suck.

What can you do :idk:

lol. it always hit me as, "well, THIS dood's a douche, the fuck would i want to check out something that impresses him?". and yah, of course it's not the band's fault..... unless it IS their fault. and it shows in their music.

but i'm kinda over that i think. i try to listen to everything i'm exposed to for a hinute to see if i like it. stuff like Tool and older Radiohead seem like they'd be a bit dated though? like, i get that the Beatles changed music and all that....... but i don't want to listen to them. i have zero emotional attachment so to me it's just a stripped down version that LED to things i like, not something i like.

murrrrrrr. hungry. Warrior (nerd) Needs Food. BADLY.

I think Radiohead and to a lesser extent Tool have remained relevant over the years,....but that's just a subjective opinion from someone who is admittedly and unashamedly behind the times.

I really dig both Radiohead and Tool, but both bands have such ridiculously douchey fan-bases that sometimes I'm almost afraid to admit that I like them, lest I be lumped in with the fucking rabid fanboi bullshit.

I love IDM. Squarepusher is awesome, Aphex is obviously the frontman for the genre. Autechre is my favorite electronic group in the fucking world, and one of my top few in music, period. Mu-ziq is pretty cool, too. And yes, IDM is a douchey name. And I feel like a douche when I have to explain what that acronym means to someone who isn't familiar.

BCrichah - have you listened to much Venetian Snares? i'm in such sweaty roadhouse lust with his stuff. lol. the incessant 7/8 time grates occasionally, but so much anger and beauty.

Hell yes I've listened to Venetian Snares, and I totally dig em. And 7/8 time is like home to me. So many riffs I write end up being 7/8, without me even realizing it. I usually blame Tool for that, they totally whore out 7/8 and 5/4. (and 13/8). ;)
