That
is actually more authentic than not. It seems like it isn't but if you read something fairly old - even the Canterbury Tales for example, which is stylistically older I think than Martin tries for, there is shit that sounds like that all over the place.
I just don't get how anyone can claim the Lord of the Rings is good writing, if only because it was written to be read by a child. It wouldn't be written well, because regardless of any talent he might have he was still writing for a child's level of reading comprehension. It's not that I don't like the books, but I just don't see it.
Like when I hear someone say that R. A. Salvatore is a good writer. I love a lot of his books. Some of my favourite books are by R. A. Salvatore. But as a writer, he's really very bad.
Because I may incite a riot if I keep this up...
Back to Game of Thrones. Anyone that read the newest book, is it good? I felt like the one before it was a lot of filler.

I'm maybe 450 pages in. Started off good but it's hit the point where most of the character's stories have slowed down and the one that was interesting up to now is becoming filler. Think I'm still at the point where things are occurring simultaneously with the events in the 4th book.
shit, it's tough to try to explain it without mentioning characters

Yeah, it's really hard to say anything, but I enjoyed it more than the book before it (which I still thought was good). The fact that a lot of it is occurring simultaneously gives some interesting little throwbacks and clarification/explanation to some events in the last book, which I thought was cool.

Huh, I've never read anything anywhere near that old except Don Quixote (and that's a translation so it won't be the same), so I have no idea. If writing/speech actually was like that in medieval times I'm impressed by the depth of his research, but I still hate reading it in his books.

All the nudity in the show is pretty sweet. I'm also incredibly glad that they made all the children characters older for the show. I realise he was going for historical accuracy (you know what I mean) in the books, but read from a modern perspective there are some INCREDIBLY CREEPY parts of the books when you think about the ages of the characters...

Love the show and the books. I don't mind the actual writing. I guess if you compare Martin to more technical writers he may fall short in some areas, but for the most part I find his style quite interesting. I do agree that the story is portrayed perfectly as a TV show. Sometimes when I'm reading the books, I realize that Martin's writing style almost resembles a script with added detail and the access to each of the character's thoughts (IMO anyway). I think this is also why it was easy for the directors to follow the text so closely in the show. I actually saw the show first over the summer, and then started reading the books right after. Unfortunately, school has been cutting into my reading time, but I'm about three fourths the way through Storm of Swords right now. I read earlier in the thread how someone mentioned that the way he kills off character may get a little old since you just read so many pages just to see them die; however, I feel like this adds effect to the stories, as well as, brings out emotions in the reader. He allows you to get attached to the characters and then just disposes of them as if they are nothing. I found that pretty remarkable. Unfortunately, it does take it's toll. I have had to take breaks while reading from how anxious it makes me sometimes

I listened to the books on tour; Roy Dotrice knocked the narration out of the fucking park.

Just finished the first book myself, and I'm going to start the second book this week. I am also extremely pumped for the new season.

I haven't seen the show at all, but the books were fantastic. The first book is probably the one I like the least (and, you have to admit, the family mottos are extremely cheesy), and he pretty much destroyed a certain female in the latest book - who, up until now, was the most interesting to me. Glad the show is great, I'll have to pick it up on DVD. Sounds like a better job than what happened with the Sword of Truth series being made into a TV show...

since we're getting all nerding out on the fantasy tip, anybody else read Joe Abercrombie's stuff? His
First Law trilogy is the best fantasy shit I've read in years.
