I was thinking about this the other day, I think part of it just stems from becoming a social pariah when you don't do those things.
Especially these days, what with the glorification of the party/socialite lifestyle...if you don't buy into that you have a hard time fitting in.
So you create your own counter-culture so you have some place to fit in/so you don't sit around jerking off to porn every Friday night.

That being said, 90% of the straight edge people you meet are super preachy hardliners, and quite frequently, religious/vegan nutjobs.
The whole militant edge types border on neo-nazism (and in my experience frequently overlap).

Haha, this is mostly true, however, I'm in my mid 20's and I still don't drink or smoke. I've stopped caring about straight edge culture (i.e. came to the realization of how silly it is) when I was 18 years old though.

Well...there you go. I didn't drink until the day my best buddy turned 21 (about 3 weeks before I did), have never smoked pot or done any other illicit drugs. But I was never EDGE because, why in the hell would I care if other people like to have a couple beers or smoke a joint? Seriously.

People are always pretty surprised to learn that I don't at least smoke weed. I'd probably try it if it were legal, but I'm the guy who always gets busted the first time I try anything even remotely rebellious or illicit...so yeah. Plus I'm afraid I'd really like it. And I'm lazy enough and have a bad enough diet as-is.

At least you use the law enforcement deterrent excuse. I hate it when people assume weed is bad because it's illegal. No, it's illegal because it's supposedly bad for you. Not the other way around. Alcohol is just as bad for you, but it's not as morally reprehensible as pot because it's legal and a part of our culture(says someone from the outskirts of Milwaukee). Weed has been so ostricized from common society that people adopt an attitude of, "well if it's supposedly bad to use it at all, it can't be any worse to use it all the time."

I'm not saying weed is or is not morally bad or bad for you physically(I will argue there's a difference between physical morality and societal morality), I'm saying that if you removed the social barriers constructed between users and non-users, an act both parties are guilty of, you might be able to find a more pragmatic social outlook and practical legal approach.

I'm sorry, I just finished my three days a week of full time college with a j and a handful of benzos, so I'm in a particularly wordy, debatey kind of mood. Not in an aggressive sense, just seeking constructive discourse.

Oh, and to clarity two things i said before: I do morally approve of marijuana usage, I simply was not advocating it for the purpose of my argument, which I have now forgotten. I'm not sure how much I trust "common knowledge" of the effects of pot, and legitimate studies are so sporadic and specific it's hard to make any general conclusion on health effects based upon them. However, consistent with my other values, I don't put too much care into my health except in extreme circumstances.

Also, this thread was started as a joke and really had nothing to do with straight edge. It was, in fact, giving a legitimate alternative to that ideology: Less drugs(booze is a drug), and other frivolous spending leads to more important spending on teh pedulz.

nothing wrong with debating like that - just wouldn't expect such statement in this thread...

smoking pot is a way of relaxing for me. Just like i enjoy "escaping from reality" sometimes via games and such, i enjoy escaping from reality via pot sometimes... but running around talking about fantasy games and dragons and warhammer 40K and shit all the time seems stupid and out of line to me - the same with pot, being high most of the time seems not only stupid to me but it's also making you stupid - sorry, but i've seen one of my good friends turning into irritable slow bastard before.

lol, that's why I added my little note at the end, a reminder to, in the word's of Conan O'Brien, "Keep cool, my babies." It's just a topic that's near and dear to my heart...my lungs that is. I had also just smoked my last j, so I was really wishing weed was legal and I could just hop on down to the Weed Store.

Either way, I tried to hold a pretty centrist point of view and not really argue for or against anything, just give my analytical perception on the issue, which once again, I've become completely derailed and forgotten what it is.

I have a few friends who don't drink or do drugs, but hang out with the rest of us and go to clubs and shit and have a great time anyway. You're only excluding yourself if you take that attitude, since anyone who gives you shit for not drinking/doing drugs is a fucking tool you wouldn't want to know anyway.

I don't do drugs or drink or anything like that, but I don't consider myself edge or anything. It's just not for me, not a fan, it's not a big deal really.


BUT, when someone is being belligerent about how "stupid it is for me to not do stuff like that, it's so narrowminded" or some bullshit, I'm edge as fuck ONLY TO PISS THEM OFF. No offense to anyone, really, none intended, but there is NOTHING, SERIOUSLY BAR NOTHING, more annoying than someone that will not fucking drop how great pot is or how awesome drinking is, and "Why don't you ever give it a try? It won't hurt anything! It's really great, you're just being immature, really." which, although that sounds exaggerated, is seriously a conversation I've had more than eight times since just going to college. It's fucking lame.
