Wow, ILF just went down one serious peg in my book. Basing a band on lyrics and vocals? What are you? a bunch of 14 year old girls?
Chad Smith and Flea are enough to make them worth listening to. Speaking of which, what ever happened to that group that was supposed to consist of Flea, Damon Albarn and Tony Allen?

I think Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic was a real monster of an album. But after that, I feel like they are just putting out silly nonsense songs. It's like they come up with a simple hook, then repeat it 20 times, and add a little more filler and BAM, it's a song. Then they do that 15 times and call it an album.
Seriously, compare a song like "Breaking the Girl" to any of the tripe they've put out in the past several years. It's like college vs kindergarten.
But they used to be awesome.

who said anything about lyrics and vocals?
the band just sucks.
chad smith is a great pocket drummer, yeah. but there are tons more, who are more technically skilled and more tasteful than him. why are they not as well known?
they don't play in a shitty band, catering to the tween/nostalgia crowd.
flea is a good funk bassist, I don't think anyones gonna deny that. but the same applies to him which does to chad smith.

I think fame and $$$ made them more formulaic.

Interesting. I just noticed the other day I'm starting to feel this same sort of thing for Guns 'n Roses. I was never a big GnR fan (might have been, I was born in '81), but I hear a few of their songs every day at work and they're just starting to sound... silly. I first noticed it with "Welcome To The Jungle", and especially with "Paradise City". The part on "Paradise City", right before the chorus, uh, something like "Rickin' brickin' TIIIIIIIIIIME... lackabackaendoftheline!"... just sounds like a big goofy joke. I do think "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a pretty killer song, as is "November Rain", but I don't know. Just, yeah, staring to sound silly.

RHCP = meh,....
They never really floated mah boat. I always liked that Under the Bridge song, but not much else.
As a bassist I never really hopped on that Flea = God bandwagon. I don't have time for fanbois.

i always thought the Chili Peppers were fucking annoying. in a way, they're the epitome of that whole school of dumb SoCal frat-boy surf-punk crap. have they occasionally played stuff that was technically accomplished and effective? yes, but so did Van Halen and the version of Yes with Trevor Rabin on guitar that did "Odor of a Lowly Fart," and i don't want to listen to them, either.
