for dependable info i'd look it up on Canadian Customs' website, but as far as i know the US/Canadian border is now under passport control as the result of the whole world terrorist situation. there have, unfortunately, been isolated incidents where they've nabbed carloads of explosives and/or known bad guys coming over the border into the USA from Canada and as a result all of us get to suffer the consequences.
the reason i know about this is that my partner/gf/spousal equivalent's brother, a US citizen. lives in Canada, and for a number of years couldn't visit the US because he'd overstayed his visa and the passport restrictions, which went into effect after the visa expired, meant he couldn't get back into Canada if he returned to the US. so unless you check with the government site and they say different, if you're coming to the US from Canada get that passport. you can get expedited passport issuance in the USA if you pay (somewhat exorbitant) additional fees; i don't know anything about Canada's policies in that regard.
