it does sorta look like a custom shop first act.

First Act started out as a custom instruments manufacturer, right? (The custom shop.) Then Wal-mart bought rights to the name and started making mass-produced crap.
i don't think wal mart bought the rights to the name, rather just sell their budget line.
first act is an odd company.....they can make very nice guitars/basses and they make cheapo wal mart shite....IMO the problem is that they both carry the same brand name, with no differentiation. most will dismiss them simply because wal mart stocks the brand. talk about being judged on your gear....whip one of those out and all guitar players in view will groan, moan and expect nothing but shite.
but whatever.....i like the idea of bustin out a first act and making inglorious noise with it.

if i see another of the Wolkswagen-branded First Act guitars for the $100 bargain price they were getting a couple of years ago i'm jumping on it. that's one of the only guitars i've ever seen with onboard effects where the effects don't seem to add more noise than they're worth, and the distortion is surprisingly decent. then i'd get some old strings and a selection of screwdrivers and get my Daevid Allen/Fred Frith on

..... man i hear ya. i've been so close on those before...and i didn't even know the effects worked. i just like the VW/wal mart connection.

i didn't know either until i walked into the local b/s/t music store in Santa Cruz and one of the guys behind the counter was playing one through a little practice amp.

The Walmart First Act single cutaway model has had some fans on snooty guitar forums before. Just can't dig up the threads. I think it was some guy's signature model with the plaid pickguard.
Edit: It was the Paul Westerburg sig model.

I think I found this bass and verified it is a First Act Custom Shop model. Here's a lefty version in white.

Cool stuff. I'd rock one.
It seems they also did a double neck version for Boris:

This is lovely (from the Wild Customs page). I'd love to see a bass version of it with jazz pups.
