agreed. people don't get exposed to rap enough so every time they hear a good rap act they make a bigger deal out of it than they should.
not saying that odd future isn't great though.
edit: call it arcade fire grammy syndrome

then again i have a sick obsession with internet/twitter rap culture. i think lil b is revolutionary. this makes my opinion invalid to some people

Well, and I say this with without even the slightest hint of hostility, because I'm honestly curious, and I wonder if you think this has an effect on this topic:
I do not use the following things/think the following things are retarded:
1) Facebook
2) Twitter
3) text messaging
4) iPhone
5) Pitchfork
6) "the news"
Thus, since I have no idea who this artist is, and have no idea about any buzz, hipster or qualified, about the artist, and I base my opinion solely on the music and videos that were presented to me here, I wonder if this has any bearing on my thinking the aforementioned artist, and I hesitate to use such a word (but), sucks.
I already stated that am in over my head in debating really anything having to do with hip hop/rap, and sorry to go off topic so selfishly, but again, from a purely, hmm, sociological perspective, I wonder if my opinion has any merit based solely on the above statements.
Can someone else who has never heard of this artist/songs/videos chime in for me here? I'm so curious, now.
C
p.s. There have been dozens of other threads on ILF containing videos/music that I have immediately liked or loved. The question is not about what I like or love, but about if anyone would actually like this if it weren't for the combination of some of the aforementioned components: hipster culture, Twitter, Pitchfork, etc.

it's not the not liking those things that would make your opinion invalid. if you just never used them or never bothered to read anything that had to do with them, that would make your opinions regarding them invalid because you wouldn't have a leg to stand on or wouldn't be aware of what they are about

i think that pretty much makes sense though.
it's very smart to base your opinion about music on the music. in fact, that's exactly what you should do. however i think we can all agree that there is more to the music scene than just the music, whether we like it or not. but, this shouldn't affect your opinion on the music. it's just something else to enjoy.
i kinda think you're implying that people are into odd future because of what the blogosphere says, and that's pretty wrong. although it may be true for some people, on the whole nahhhhhhh.
and hipsters don't really exist

Glowing blog reviews of bands that no one cares about are the reason i dont read music blogs. People be gettin paid for their opinions yo. Just when i thought music blogs were this great new thing. Everything is gonna suck eventually unless its totally fucking worthless. That should keep the capitalists away. Oh wait, thats a good untapped market segment...the anti corprate dollar. Im starting to sound like bill hicks.

hipster...
I just think it's really fucking cool that he kills himself at the end of the video. Most rappers don't do that.
Could also have something to do with the fact that they are so young and it makes people like Epi and I (same age group as Odd Future) feel like you dont necessarily have to be in yr mid-20s before you can do something cool.
Minimal production (in the rap game) = punk
killing yrself at the end of a video = punk
to me anyways.

imo punk and rap culture are two sides of the same coin.

same general ideology and the roots are definitely similar.
