Got it.

I could only play it for about 10 minutes before plaster repairs dragged me away. I'm remodeling my office / studio, and if I don't get it done soon, I'll be sleeping on the couch... heh.
I'm going to clean the bass up and do a quick setup on it on Monday or Tuesday, and I'll post a picture then.
Thanks again guys.

Finally got around to taking a picture.
It was pretty nasty, so I gave it a really good cleaning. I conditioned the fretboard, and polished the frets. Even though I haven't put new strings on it yet, I gave it a quick setup. The neck had way too much relief, so I turned the truss rod over the course of a week. I left it a bit high, since I'm not quite sure how I like a bass to be setup. The jack was loose, and the nut on the jack was stripped, so I replaced it.

Thanks again for the help.

Dang dude. The thing certainly LOOKS great. How does it play? Way to go on the holding out for a lower price. I'm super terrible at haggling and negotiating and blowjobbing and all that shit. Good jarb.

As a guitarist who hasn't played bass, it plays pretty nice... heh.
I haven't played it enough to know how I want it setup, and I didn't want to put too much work into it until I get new strings. Fender says the action should be 0.012" when you capo the 1st fret and fret the last fret. It was close to 0.1, which was ridiculous. I lowered it to about 0.025, and setup the string height according to the guide. I had some buzz on the A string at the 15th fret-- the 16th fret is too high. I don't have any fret files, so I just raised the string saddle a bit to get rid of the buzz.
It didn't look as nice when I got it. The fretboard was really grimy, the frets were all tarnished, and the body had a nasty pawn shop funk all over it. I polished the frets with 0000 steel wool, then a bit of Brasso, and then used my Dremel's buffing wheel to bring back the shine. Conditioned the fretboard with lemon oil. Cleaned and polished all the metal. Cleaned the body and neck, and waxed the body w/ carnauba.
You can barely see the damage near the jack on the bottom edge in the picture The gouge is on the bottom. I don't see it when I'm playing, so it doesn't bug me at all. My strat that I bought new has matching damage.

You are so lucky.
We don't have any pawn shops around here. :/

thats an awesome deal/story. My bass player has been playing the same mexi jazz bass for 6 years now. he got it professionally set up once and he takes it in once a year for a check up and it hasn't needed any adjustments since. really amazing considering the amount of playing/travel we do (150 shows a year)
