Well you see,...you start out underneath these blocks. You can jump and hit them with your fist. If you are small they will just bounce up. Occasionally you'll you hit one and a powerup will appear. If you get a Mushroom you grow bigger and then you can actually smash the blocks,...unless of course the contain coins. There are all kinds of menacing creatures that you have to avoid as well as bottomless pits. Then you get to this step like structure that you have to jump off of and capture a flag. If you don't get the full points by hitting the top of the flag pole (it's 1 or 2000 points; it's been since the 80's that I've been on this level) you will be taunted by your friends for having an inadequately small penis. Either way,...after that you'll find yourself on a new level.

And you are right,...they are relatively flat in nature.
