Man, I've never even held a real gun. I don't know how to use the fucking things. Besides, handguns are illegal throughout the entire country! Where do these ppl even get the damned things from?
This is not a political statement of any kind, just a statement of fact. So please don't think I'm trying to make this a political argument. But, in a country where it is illegal to have a handgun, you are ensuring (by definition) that only criminals will have one.
Fo. Sho.
And yeah, not political, just fact.

Michael Moore also one time put a huge trash barrel full of rifles at the border with a huge sign that read "free guns for Canadians."

Really, this is true. It's the same with anything governments decide to make illegal: there's a certain mystique about anything illegal that creates a draw for any sane person.
yeah this is true, and i think for things like drugs and prostitution it's part of the argument to legalise them, so as to make them safer and less shady for everyone involved. but with guns i think it's different and them being legal is bad for pretty much everyone. criminals have easy access to guns, whereas in britain even a hardened criminal would struggle to get a handgun, let alone an assault rifle or something like some states have access to. people only need to own guns because they feel they have to defend themselves from other people with guns. if there were no guns this wouldn't be a problem, as it isn't in the uk.
also home invasions are incredibly rare as far as I know, but if it makes you feel safer to own a gun then i can understand. i'm just glad i don't have to worry about that where i live

...and making sure that every idiot who wants one can get one means that ... every idiot who wants one will get one. Does that make you feel safer?
If the implications of what you said were true, countries that don't have gun control would have much lower rates of violent crime and homicide than those that do, which is patently not the case. Organised criminals will always have weapons, take them out of the equation. It's the random fuckwits, the muggers, the nutjobs, the roadrage idiots with a gun in the glove compartment who shoot someone for cutting them off on the highway. In a society where you can go the the store and pick up a six pack of beer, some smokes and a gun, you're going to have trouble.

I specifically said I was not making a political statement, nor was I saying whether I support gun bans or not. The one thing I said is patently true; it is not a matter of argument or opinion. And then I said nothing else. You are assuming you know how I feel about this subject without knowing anything about my stance, which means you are arguing with a strawman. I will not bite, and I leave you to continue to do so.

yep, prostitution is always going to happen. make it legal and it removes a lot of the worst things about it. there are of course still problem with prostitution even when legal, but these are easier to deal with when it's out in the open and not illegal

You can't really make a statement like that and expect people not to comment, though. I agree with Devn, anyway. In my situation the other day, it was some "random fuckwits", not gangsters or organized criminals. The harder guns are to procure, the less they'll be misused. Blicero has a good point when he says:
blicero wrote:people only need to own guns because they feel they have to defend themselves from other people with guns. if there were no guns this wouldn't be a problem, as it isn't in the uk.
And it never used to be in Canada either. The last 5 years or so there has been a huge jump in gun violence, especially in Toronto, after they installed the ferry between Rochester and T.O. There are many that would blame the U.S. for Canada's increased gun violence... I blame the authorities for not bringing the hammer down on anybody that's caught with one and for us having lackluster border control.

I have firearms in my house. I live in a violent city. If somebody picks my house to invade, I will not hesitate to unload like hell.

I have a shot gun. I know you can get them in canada. VERY effective. If moving is out of the question a shotgun is an easy solution to being worried about skum walking into your home.
