an update for anybody that cares: found a cheap alternator and put it in today. car runs again. i am happy.
My car died and needed a bunch of work done to it, so I said fuck it and sold it to some wannabe high-school mechanic kid.
No payments, no repairs, no insurance, no gas, no chance of theft. It's all wins.
I have ZipCar for emergencies, I walk, and I am lucky to live in a city with good public trans.
