I just realized that I didn't really answer your questions.

I play noise every now and then, it really depends on my mood. Noise is actually really hard to make well. Because controlled chaos (which is how I like my noise) is really difficult to do. I like both playing and listening to it, but I AM picky about it, because there is a lot of lazy, bad noise out there.

The way I make noise is generally just using combinations of pedals or synths until I get something that sounds chaotic, but beautiful. Then I more or less let the effects take on a life of their own, creating their own sound. But I try to guide it, to something that expresses an emotion or a scene or something like that in my head. That sounds really dumb.

My first real exposure to noise as music was probably the Revolution 9 by the Beatles, when I was a kid. But I really didn't get it at the time. The first time I ever enjoyed something like that was when I saw Nirvana in '93, and they closed the set with about 10 minutes of noise, feedback and trashing the stage. It may seem cliched now, but it was very cool and still sounded musical and expressive.

The one noise piece that always inspired me the most was "Live at Brixton Academy" by Atari Teenage Riot. It BLEW me away. This was ATR's final concert, and rather than play any of their songs, they just blasted the crowd with 26 minutes of white noise rage. As for how to define it... uh, I dunno. Music that doesn't conform to standards of meter, melody or chord structure. Music that's more on the "organized sound" end of things. I enjoy making it very much, and enjoy listening to some of it more than others. I suspect that my attempts at noise are pretty fringe to the genre, though, since I have a hard time letting go of melody and rhythm entirely.

I dabble in noise. it is fun and a good release from structure. I plan to start doing some shows this year.

theres just something satisfying about completely destroying audio signals. the whole experimentation aspect and manipulation of harsh unpredictable tones is kinda like breaking a wild horse, its a wonderful challenge.

and the expressions on people's faces when you do it on stage are pretty priceless.

I don't like listening to noise (like for pleasure), but I looooooooooooooooove playing it, it's very emotive IMO.

i don't play noise i DO noise.

i love listening to noise too: tape/vinyl/compact disc/MP3/microcassette et cetera...it really doesn't matter.
