That opening was awesome. We did something similar on our new record. At random our one guitar track had radio in it. We just kept it.

Happy new year everyone. A little slow on that one, but I didn't even get online most of yesterday and NYE. I too avoided the hangover through my teetotaler ways. My wife was forced into it via pregnancy, but we had a good time watching movies and toasting with sparkling apple juice lol.

RAT into a Pharaoh and RAT into a Meathead Dark clone, along with RAT on bass. I liked it, tightened everything up enough to get some nice palm muting and made it a little meaner sounding. I'm really loving my Wizard and Cthulhu best for fuzzes lately though, so I'm itching to try a similar setup with Nick's Volt Thrower pedal in place of the RAT, when I get the Dunwich tourbox.

You should try the meathead maxxed into the rat with gain max filter full ccw and volume max GUH!!! Thats my main dirt tone right now. I am also itching hard for a volt thrower.....

BTW love the tones and riffs in that track!!! If you doubled the speed you could convince me it was converge!
Thanks Skip! I still need to try the fuzzes into the RAT, but the RAT>Meathead and RAT>Pharaoh combos sounded killer. It reminded me that I keep putting a noise gate on the backburner though. The track I did coil tapped was noisy as hell.

I feel that, I'm in about 4 right now. If any of them were really up and running full time, I could probably get away with one main band and a side project or a solo project. As it is now two of them are recording projects only, no practices or gigs. One practices regularly and has recorded, which we haven't released yet, but we haven't gigged yet. The other gigged once like two years ago and hasn't practiced in 6 months, but we're still in the process of slowing recording a release. I think as a formality before officially dying with little to no fanfare.

Diggin' the radio conk! Weird stuff like that always makes things a little unpredictable and interesting. I've for the first time rough mixed and uploaded some of my own stuff:

Does anyone use standard dynamic close miking for their guitar recordings? Listening to everyone's clips, I feel like my mic brickwalled a little bit. It's hard to tell how much of the fuzz is mic clipping, and how much is sputtering from overdriving my Rangemaster clone Probably could have used a little more juice from the amp, some parts didn't sustain like I wanted them to. I'll probably pick up a condenser mic and additional setup stuff for it instead of a backup guitar or new head or cabs, because recording is a more feasible idea for me than live playing given my living situation.

Conky, what mic was running with the Zoom device?

I primarily use a Shure SM7B. It's got a lot of headroom and it's really directional. So it works really great for loud guitars, bass, screamy vocals, kick drum and floor tom. It takes a lot of mic preamp gain and it doesn't particularly color the source that much, some people want the opposite of that. The way I have my music room setup at home, I just have that mic always setup and move it wherever I need it. Sometimes I pull out a LDC for different vocals and I have some other dynamic mics stored in the closet if I want something a little different (the rest of my mic locker is in a warehouse). 90% of the time I just use that SM7B though and it gets the job done. It favors my recording style anyway, very clean and neutral with lots of headroom. I get all the tones I want in the room and just want to capture it pretty straight forwardly, instead of using mics and outboard gear that really heavily colors everything. I used to be into that, but once I moved away from analog recording my approach shifted A LOT.

Some dynamic mics can get really fizzy sounding on fuzz and heavy distortion. I find if you keep the preamp level down with plenty of headroom (I usually try to peak at around -12db on a digital meter for guitar) and play around with the right positioning on the microphone, you can get a pretty clean sound with most heavy guitar tones. By clean, I mean only dirty from what's coming into the mic, no clipping or weirdness on the track. Volume of the amp shouldn't be too big an issue. I've recorded plenty of 100+ watt full stacks at full volume and been able to get a clear sound. Engineers that say they can't recording loud sources infuriate me. Right tools for the right job. I wouldn't use the same mic for that on a flute or softly played acoustic guitar and ask them to play as loud as possible.

mxr 990 and some audio technica thing, just because it's what i have. I try to place them far enough away from the amps so they are not getting blown out but not so close to the drums to where the drums are to out front.

Also really dig the video. What film, is that from?

Conk, that radio noise is the best sample ever and yeah, pretty creepy.
I heard somewhere that a lot of old radio broadcasts still bounce around and people can hear shit today that was broadcast in the Second WW, but I just did some research into that and apparently its bunkum.
Still, would be cool.

Hopefully your not all super hung over.
I've been going to bed REALLY early these last few days. I've just been watching films on Netflix. Every year this happens. The great Netflix purge happens and I always forget to watch the movies I want to watch before they are removed, so now I have about fifteen films to watch in a few days.

Honestly it sounds like total shit. My drummer has a zoom h2n but while it sounds a little better still not that great and doesn't pick up his kick drum. I don't know how much he's messed with the gain on the Mic though, and I haven't fuct with it yet. There's not much room for a "optimal" placement.
I need something to listen to between practice days.

First day of recreational pot sales in Colorado.
The Zoom H2N should be fine for that job. That's what it's designed for. Have you tried moving it around the room? There are online guides to help you decide where the best position is, or if you have patience then you can experiment yourself.

I have never really liked super close mics when recording guitars. It always sounds too small and tight. I have tried putting mics right up on the grill as is demonstrated everywhere but I just never thought it sounded good. Same for the sm57, never really liked it even though that is what everyone uses. I liked the sennheiser e609 which is basically their version of the sm57 or is at least in the same price range. And there are a good number of cheaper condenser mics out there. A mic I have been looking to score is a royer 121 or its little brother the 101. They are both on the more expensive side, especially in comparison to a sm57, but they both sound really great for guitar.

I generally have been using two or more mics when recording guitar in the studio. If you go back a couple pages you can see the set up I used on the other guitar player in my band. But the basic idea was that I used a dynamic mic (sennheiser 421) pulled back from the grill a few inches to get some of the tight mid range with a ribbon mic and a condenser mic a few feet away to make up the main body of the sound. I could probably get away with using either/or between the ribbon and condenser but blended they sound nice. I would try a set up like that to get a little bit more room sound and make the guitar sound more natural.
