I swing both ways...and so do my basses /rimshot
My Big [gay] Al's have active/passive electronics, the humbucker one sounds better in active, its a dark sounding bass so I have to goose the high mids to make it sound "right" to me. The SSS one sounds fucking great passive...if I could remove the preamp I would, I can't remember the last time I actually turned on the preamp for an entire song.
I'd rock a P with crusty old flats played through a flip top.
I think Flats and Octavers make sweet sweet love to one another.
If you let your battery die the volume difference isn't as noticeable.
I like a really really hot passive pickup. The Kent Armstrongs in my buddies Carl has a really bright open sounding tone. When my boss on I work on my Proto 5 string,...I'm definitely going with an overwound passive pup.
What do you guys know about Dark Stars. They seem to be flava of the month over on TB.

they're just comfortable for me.
also, RARRrRRRrR@smallEQ
Chromes are just flats They are stainless I think though... They are really smoove even compared to "normal" flats and are a bit brighter that's it. I've used them since day one so they are just "home" for me and I play them intill the cores rust out and they break before changing

BTW: FAMOUS
Is Fred Hammon even around anymore? I thought he had kind of dropped off the face of the earth. They aren't really the flavor of the month thing anymore...4 years ago totally though.
I had one in a Mike Dirnt P, sounded great, more open than a Pbass. Turned this: Into this:
Great sounding bass, fucking bassball bat neck was a dealbreaker, espescially paired with the lack of body contour.

If its done correctly it doesn't have to be that way. There is basically no volume difference between active and passive on my basses.
True... but that is intill to run it into a gain effect: Dirt, filter, Comp... then for me they always get a little louder...
Can't say I noticed it with any of my fuzz boxes. May have to do with I am always playing one bass at a time, I never switch basses during a show and a lot of times I'll play one bass for a month solid and then I'll play the other one for a month. Course I'm pretty much all digital now and the SA stuff seems to be rather indifferent to active vs passive.
Yeah,...Darkstars aren't so much flava anymore,...but they were for a while,...and I'm wondering if it's something the boss should consider,...or if it was just a passing fad.
Also, notice the lack of effects boxes and four different basses. There was once a time when all of my GAS was related to basses rather than effects...

ah. gotcha. i have Black Beauties on the 6 string fretless Dean that i never play and REALLY need to list for them sales. doesn't really do it for me. i like a brighter tone and the way stainless feel. there's some half rounds (i think that's what you call them, again, me = idjit about strings) on a 5 string Musicman Sub i got off JoshB (also need to sell) that are kinda fun.
i never got the multiple basses thing. maybe 'cause i've never done session work or played with a bunch of bands that needed a specific sound, but one nice bass (and i have the nicest i've ever owned right now) that i like and am comfortable with and i'm good. and a similar backup for being professional's sake is the good.

Ah,...colored strings,...another fad I hate. Far be it for me to tell anyone not to use em,..but seriously,...ugh. I can get along with black flats on a fretless,...but the bright girly colors,...

I have black beauties on my carvin and my esp right now. I do like their tone, I don't really give a shit about the fact that they're black (I got one of the sets as a gift). I could go either way about buying them again, but it's not like I think they're the coolest shit in town just because they're black or anything.
