I really did try with The Hunter

It really was a waste of time. I hope they've bucked their fucking ideas up.

Torche was really good live when I saw them earlier this year. I can't get into their newer stuff recorded though. I dig Meanderthal. Lately I've just been listening to Windhand though, so I'm in that slow and heavy state of mind.

Windhand rule. So glad I got to see them live finally. They pretty much went with "fuck this club's sound system" and only mic'd the vocals/drums minimally. They turned their Matamp stacks up to 10 and it was glorious.Better sound than both Kvelertak and High On Fire.

Also Kvelertak suck.

I hear they're writing/recording new stuff, and something tells me it's going to be another The Hunter. After all, that's apparently what they wanted to play. Unless they were lying or going through a weird phase in all the interviews I watched prior to the release of The Hunter, it was everything they wanted it to be. They, and many of the fans and critics alike, loved it. That worries me. It potentially suggests that either each member has been tricked into believing the hype that surrounds them as a whole and now feel they're gods with godlike abilities at writing crazy music without any continuity, or up until now every record has been a massive fluke and their success is dependent on the laws of nature, or it was an accidental fuck up they hope to rectify without losing this streak of weirdness they're proudly on. I have no problem with weird albums as long as they're well-written. They obviously took a lot from Pink Floyd, Zappa, Rush, King Crimson, etc., but each of those acts possessed some form of intelligent design and sounded sensible albeit an insensible way. This is why I've tried listening to The Hunter as much as possible over a long period of time and in different circumstances. The first time I heard Zappa I thought it was pretentious bullshit, but when you rip it apart it's pure genius. The Hunter is nothing like this, in my opinion. You rip it apart and you find less and less. I think it's one of those 'put-on-every-now-and-again-for-a-laugh' albums. You can't take it seriously or else you'll get depressed and angry. I'm a total fanboi for Mastodon so it was and still is a disappointment. Blood Mountain is still one my favourite records of all time, and their show supporting that album in Dublin, 2007 is still to this day my favourite concert ever.

Kvelertak was okay when I saw them with Torche and Converge. But I'm a huge Converge fan so I really didn't care to remember anyone else on that show as much.

I'm really really digging both Windhand releases though. I'd love to see them live. They sound so fucking thick and huge on both records.

I was pretty underwhelmed by their performance with High on Fire. When I saw them with Torche and Converge they were going nuts on stage and it was killer. Way more subdued this time around.

It was just gimmicky punk-ish rock to me. Nothing stood out.

I saw Kvelertak a few weeks back with High on Fire and Doomriders. Both of those bands were significantly better than Kvelertak.

Kevelertak doesn't really do it for me. I remember going to see Royal Thunder open up for some moderately famous sort of anthemic party rock/metal band full of dudes with good beards. They had a ton of energy, this bearded party rock band. Kevelertak is usually really energetic but when I saw them on this High On Fire tour I was pretty underwhelmed with their performance. It was just pretty meh.

I did. I was in the band twice. To the best of my knowledge, that all happened after I left, although my role in the band was always more akin to a session musician so if he was doing that at the time I probably would not have known. Yeah. I was on the live album, Black Cascade and the Malevolent Grain e.p. Indian is 100% more my thing, too. Don't miss being a part of that band or a part of the black metal scene at all.
And yeah, addiction is nasty. I've had a fair amount of friends go through it and pull out at the end. Unfortunately not everyone does.

A Looming Resonance is my favorite WITTR song. If / when I ever meet you I will definitely buy you a beer or three for being part of such a great fucking song. I dig Indian too and can't wait for the new one to come out.

I'm listening to Wilco at the moment. I don't normally like such airy-fairy music, but it's a very good record (their famous Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) and has some intelligent design to it.

Torche is really fun live.

I listened to the hunter once, thought it kind of sucked, figured it might be the production...

Then I saw them on that tour with Opeth (who I've accidentally seen way too many times. Not my thing). And the songs sucked live, too. Wicked lame. Esp. since Mastodon used to be absolutely incredible live. They definitely treat it more like a day job now, and its a bummer.

Also, I own that Wilco album. I listen to it once a year or so to see if I've finally "gotten it yet." So far it hasn't clicked.
