Also the bridge pickup cover is an add on. I have seen t-40s in much better condition and itch all 4 strings. Be sure to play it and test the electronics before you buy, they are notorious for having jacked up electronics. An easy fix but something to be aware of.

Pickups haven't changed, but I did totally strip it and, now that I have AN ACTUAL ROUTER OH MAN, smoothed out the bottom of the previously chiseled sections and turned it into one big swimming pool cavity. I shielded everything, trimmed the "pickup ring" ( ) and added 3 on-offs instead of that weird other volume thing. I also recessed the bridge...pretty much because I had a router in my hands and wanted to. Now I don't have to fuck around to make the bridge wire work. Also I really, really like the volume pot being wired backwards. Swells and stuff seem much easier for me.

The neck mudbucker is pretty self-explanatory. If you combine the P and a mudbucker it yields the trebl-iest P sound ever. Probably because one pickup is like 8k and one is 30k. Double mudbucker is instant DUB MODE. I very strongly considered throwing 2 old strat pickups in there instead of the bridge one, but I also very strongly did not feel like screwing around with it anymore. Maybe some other time.

...also the pickup screws kinda...poke out of the back. Whatever. When you impale yourself on a pickup screw it really helps you connect with the instrument.

I just thought this bass needed to be seen again.
Volume pot wired backwards for swells is a neat idea.

The change was made around '81.
I had a '79 without the exposed blades and had an '82 with them.

Some say the earlier one's are better but I never heard it.... it's another idiotic wankfest discussion they like to have over on TB.

d'awww
That bass is in pieces right now; stole the bridge mudbucker and slapped it into the Jag, the P went into the SBV-500...but I just borrowed my friend's soldering iron so that P is going back to its rightful place. As much as I love mudbuckers, bridge ones are pretty useless; better to use a neck one in combination with a different humbucker in the bridge. THAT sounds awesome.
Plus I can fix my cables and shit now, gonna be so nice.
