no, the holocaust is too impersonal to be truly depressing

life.

that relationship that broke up.

your job...Arbeit Macht Frei, dontchaknow.

the morning commute: get on the train.

the truth of human nature: as much as we like to think that we're Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Rembrandt, we're really Himmler, Heydrich, and Demjanjuk.

the ultimate symbol of the pointlessness of idealism...after all, the Nazis were idealists. ALL ideals require the breaking of eggs to make the proverbial omelet. and if that's not depressing enough for you, i give up.

that's depressing in the "inescapable truth" sense. I'm going for a tragic comedy minus the comedy.

Candide-esque protagonist desperately in love with snooty cynical bitch who toys with him like catnip mouse. eventually leaves him in gutter right when a typical love story would have her melt and redeem him.

at some point he should get hit by a car and have to spend several months in a half-body cast. while there's all kinds of other shit going on. like when Walter Becker got hit by the taxi while Steely Dan was making the Gaucho album. when in doubt, throw in random accidents and badness. it worked for Forrest Gump.
