For kickstarter you really should have at least have a fully working prototype. By that stage you should have a realistic idea of the work involved and the costs etc. At least that way this whole mess could have been avoided. I heard kickstarter got a little tougher on the rules since the console was launched but not sure of the difference..

I'm about to drop a fuck ton of money on a venture for Acid Splash Designs, but there's no way I'll do a kickstarter. It's called getting a loan.
I completely get where you're coming from, but if I had a small business that I was looking to expand I'd at least try kickstarter. If it's underfunded, I could go get a loan as planned; if I met the goal, I essentially have a bunch of risk-free capital to spend. I don't know the exact legal ramifications of "defaulting" on a kickstarter campaign, but I'm sure you have a lot more flexibility with "repaying" people with their rewards than you would with loan payments. Just my $0.02
I'm sure if you offered etched pedals as rewards for start-up capital people would be all over that

See I'd do something like that, but I don't feel like I need to. I'm a fuckin baller.

If I could pull it off I sure as well would do a kickstarter, who wouldn't want a no-interest capital to start production/operations? :???:
Especially if you're confident enough to get a loan in the first place

it's like when Protest the Hero did their kickstarter and as one of the expenses put down something like "substituting for our dayjobs for the time spent recording"
I have never even played a Devi pedal. I CAN'T really care what happens with the company, except for my sympathy for everyoen who loves her pedals... anyway I somehow expected this, like many others.... unlike many others, however, I hope that this time she doesn't fucking come back in ANY way
these dramas were really easy to get sucked in and i'm just really tired of hearing about her shenanigans

As a long time fan of Devi and her work, I'm pretty bummed out by the news. But I also can't say im surprised. I suspected something might be off with her after hearing about the new vagina kickstarter. I only hope that three things come of this: 1) That whoever takes over Devi Ever fx does the brand some justice and brings them back to their former glory. ifanem looks like a good choice for that. 2) That everyone gets the compensation they deserve and 3) that Devi gets some fucking help. She obviously is going through some shit mentally, and as a friend I hope she is alright and successful in whatever endeavors she pursues next.
Devi's pedals always kicked ass, and I'm happy to have finally gotten a Hyperion in some form before this happened.

This line of thinking is exactly why it's a bad idea to fund a kickstarter

Are we still fucking stuck on use he, it, etc when referring to trans people? Really? I thought maybe the fine folks of ILF could make it through this discourse without stooping to that level.
I completely understand the frustration with the current situation, but that is absolutely disgusting bigoted shit.

Also, Kickstarter is the SHIT when used correctly. It is an extremely well organizing pre-order set up when people follow through.
I already work two jobs to keep everything moving forward for us. The idea that we are just LAZY and that is why we used a kickstarter to launch a pedal is ridiculous.

Agreed on your point on the shitty pronoun game for trans folk, but it was one person, not all of ILF. I definitely don't endorse it.
As for your point about kickstarter being great for pre-orders, sure, agreed. But I'd venture that most kickstarters aren't set up as pre-orders, rather they're set up for more speculative projects. And for that purpose, it may be great for the creator, but it's a terribly insecure deal for the funder. As long as the the kickstarter is fully funded, the creater can say fuck it and fly off somewhere, and there's fuck-all the funders can do about it.

I completely agree. Kickstarter is fantastic for businesses but terrible for consumers. Kickstarter is more analogous to venture capital financing than a fancy preorder system. It's an investment with risks, and you should only invest in people you trust. The only check or balance is that future kickstarter funding will be substantially more difficult (if not impossible) to obtain if you're a sleezebag.

You are correct, sir. The vast majority of ILF is great about calling people out for this kind of bigoted shit.
Also right on with the KS points. It is being used as venture capital, especially since most private VCs and banks are not willing to go out on a limb anymore (unless it involves the banks and lenders, themselves, taking huge risks with other people's money).
