The despair or whatever that funeral doom or black metal is supposed to convey is lost on me.
I don't get it, feels like I'm missing something.
But it's just like...wut.

Eh, from I've come to understand is that European Rock/Metal has more of an emphasis on emotions and folklore while in other countries like US, it's more focused on overall self satisfaction and politics.
I am not implying a 2deep4u sort of thing, just different sensibilities.
Kind of like watching TV Shows and Movies for a Character Study rather than a Plot. There's nothing wrong with either, just different stokes.

context: Ms. Hill is a nutter--an article by over-politicised black writer Touré in Rolling Stone called her Unplugged album "a public breakdown"--who's been following a "spiritual advisor" since the early 00s, was so impossible to deal with that she's blamed for the end of the 2005 Fugees reunion, who has released only one solo single since 2002 and hasn't done a studio album since 1998, and is about to go to prison for tax evasion while her despised Sony Music prepares to issue a new album. in court she said that she'd dropped out of the industry to raise her children, but is on record that she spent three years before she had kids avoiding social interactions of any kind. You can't take anything she says seriously. If she's been ordered to counseling, it's because she's fucking daft. she wants to blame the music industry and eeeebil white people for the facts that she destroyed her own career and that nobody has given a shit about her for at least ten years.

I included the whole article for giggles, it's from infowars for some perspective... The part I thought was relevant to the convo. was this:
sonidero wrote:Hill has attempted to warn young people about how “pop culture cannibalism” and the deliberate reductionism of art and music is damaging a whole generation and turning them into passive, unthinking consumers – destroying inspiration and true creativity in the name of profit.

OK, infowars explains a lot. those guys think it's a conspiracy if i fart too much. but seriously, it feels to me like the real subtext is "the music industry must be destroying peoples' minds because nobody wants to buy my product any more." it's also brutally ironic that someone from the Fugees whose most notable work was a cover of "Killing Me Softly" is bitching about "reductionism" when that's, well, her fucking stock in trade.

and this is why I find most main stream music more depressing then suicidal blackmetal.....

Totally agree, I've been working hard to get to the point where terrible music doesn't anger me. I'm making strides but I should maybe bring that up with my shrink

i've gotten to a point where i don't mind "bad" music as much, because my judgements are no more valid than anyone else's and IMO even awful music is harmless. it's just notes in the air, and if it makes other people happy who the fuck am i to complain? i'm not required to listen to it, and just because i like something doesn't mean it's better or that it's inherently deserving of mass popularity, it just means i like it.
