AngryGoldfish wrote:You probably won't get the same thing with another RAT. I've tried a bunch of RAT pedals and the Iron Horse definitely sounds different. It's sludgier at higher gain settings and isn't as cutting at lower settings where a 'traditional' RAT usually works well as a boost for a high gain amp. A RAT has this low-midrange growl that sounds amazing, but it still remains tight. It's kinda contradictory, but it works. It's gnarly and guttural. The Iron Horse is more of a wild beast than a cutting long sword, so to speak. If you want something tamer, but still mean and Doomy, check out either an original or a boutique clone. Acid Age Electronics have one that I'd like to try next. The JAM Pedals Rattler, Retro Sonic Distortion, Freakshow FX Brown Rabbit, CMAT Brown Plague, Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, Suhr Riot, Montgomery Appliances Longtail, Hartman LM308, Lovekraft Chupacabra, etc. are all RAT clones or derivatives to consider. I know the Retro Sonic, Freakshow FX, Montgomery and Suhr well enough to say they're all different. The Longtail is great for boosting but not as a standalone distortion. The Suhr Riot is great for tight, modern high gain, but not as good for sludge. The Brown Rabbit is balanced, as the Retro Sonic Distortion. They're not polite as such, they just don't have the 'character' some of the others have. That's not a criticism. Some would say it's a compliment. If you find the Iron Horse too unwieldy like I do, a more manageable and predictable variety might be better. I'd like to try Nick's Volt Thrower and the Acig Age Electronics versions next.
Thanks for all the input on them. I may pick up a regular Rat with or without the 308 just to see.

In the event that I get it and don't dig it, I will definitely keep you in mind :thumb:

Thought I had some Lava cable issues, but it turns out the Pharaoh has a fucked up footswitch that doesn't fully engage all of the time. Pissing me off. :grumpy:

Jonesing to sneak a reverb back on there.

You always manage to cram so much awesome on that small board

I'm in a new band called Khemmis. We just released a 3 song demo/ep/whateveryouwatntocallit. If you like Sleep, Red Fang, Sabbath, and Pallbearer, you might dig us. Or you might not. Whatever. It's free, so stop complaining.

I'm about 15 seconds into the first song and can already tell I'm gonna dig it.

Nuthin like a break up to make you realise how far you'd go for a set of tits.
I have also thought having my own would be the solution to all my problems, in the past.
Yes.
All that is behind me now....

Anyway, Ape Blaster rules.
Nice website D. Now hurry up and start building gnarl-arse phasers!
If you can get the same amount of thickness and definition into a phaser that you can into the AB. I will give you a kidney.
Maybe mine. Maybe not.

All this RAT talk makes me want to spend more time with the PDX and BF combo. BF>PDX sounded gnarls, but I haven't tried the reverse yet (mostly cause I took the Mig apart not long after getting it).
Gonna head to the electronics shop in a bit and pick up a few bits and bobs. Hopefully its enough to finally reassemble the old girl. Then I can corksniff about opamps with y'all.
Skully: I read the post about DoS' OD250 in your shark tank after I saw him post it in the pedal board thread. I put a bid on a D+ straight after and I was gonna hassle you about the mods you did.
I didn't win. Which I have mixed feelings about.

I don't care whose kidney it is (was?) as long as it's compatible with my robot tits!

Oh yeah I forgot: "Baronessque". NICE ONE :animal:

Wordsmith, baby!

Yeah, I'd hate for your tits to reject a kidney.

Forgot to mention that my Black Forest arrived yesterday. Had a bit of time to try it out at absurdly low sleeping baby volumes and I immediately regret waiting so long to try one out. All sorts of tasty dirt tones in that box. Makes me realize how much I need to get ahold of a Quantum Mystic

BF foh LYFE!

Seriously. I love that thing.

Two best purchases I've made this year. Ape Blaster and Black Forest.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the BF gets better at loud volumes, like all BAT shit. It just punishes your amp.

My one decent pedal demo. I need to get off my ass and record some more.

holy shit, i've got bass cabs running out of my fucking ears and i don't even play bass. and unfortunately they're all empty. i've got the monolith which has 2 15's and 2 10's in one cab, which i have to fix up some of the glue on the tolex edges, make a front panel with grill cloth and put in some handles and speakers. and then today i stumbled upon two more. one seems to be a close reproduction of the old acoustic 1x18 with a rear facing speaker and folded horn porting on top and bottom and another one that is a 2x15 with some top and bottom porting as well. the 1x18 still needs a bunch of stuff. tolex, handle, wheels, grill cloth and a speaker. the 2x15 is a little better, just needs speakers, casters and handles. it's stained sort of like faux emperor style. if anyone in the area wants one for a project, get in touch. i'd let em go cheap right now. my plan is to slowly finish them and find them homes as i can. i've certainly got some good winter projects ahead of me, as long as i can manage to afford speakers.

I'd really like to score that monolith cab u have Parker. It would be the perfect synth cab for playing out. None that I'm aware of ever made it to the east coast for me to try and score. :( maybe if I start saving now by the time u finish it I could buy it off u and have it shipped, unfortunately not likely but a man can dream.

Parker, could you take some pics of the 2x10/2x15 and the 2x15?
I have an old ACC 1x18 like you are describing and I put the Cerwin Vega in it. It is awesome. I still have the ACC original speaker, perhaps a trade could happen?
D-Day wrote: Ape Blaster. Note definition and chord clarity are what it's all about and there's plenty of bass. There are guys on this very forum that can verify these claims.
Very true. I am running 3 different main dirt sections, Pharaoh>revelation SB>Quantum Mystic, LSTR>OCD/destroyer, and Ape Blaster. It doesn't really need anything else and is what I go to when I want thickness and massive fuzzed distortion but keeping clarity. really kicks ass
D-Day wrote:I actually have silicon titties.
this is also true.

Also, Khemmis! Rad stuff. :thumb:

if only there were an easy way to get it out east. i have no idea what shipping on that monster would be, but i'm sure it's not cheap. maybe not terrible if it was empty though.

will do for sure. in the next couple of days. i'd probably be open to a trade. having an 18 would make that cab easier to sell for sure.

I'd actually prefer it unloaded so I could choose the speakers I want, but it's probably a lot easier to let John scoop it up if he's interested in it. But if for some reason he doesn't want it definitely let me know!!!
