It allows the guitar to lay completely flat. There isn't an angle in the headstock, so it lays 100% flat on the ground or wherever you rest it!

ok... and why is that important? to double as a lapsteel?

It's not really important at all. I don't really mind it though.

um... yeah.. I get that... but "normally" the machine heads point towards the back so you don't have to reach around the front of the head to tune...
