my point regarding (oh, brother) "the 'n' word": in the 21st century, this word is a colloquialism ("slang word") used in many aspects of informal culture despite the reaction it evokes from the intellectual and media class. it's used in deuces-wild fashion in black culture, is in common usage as a synonym for "friend," "bro," or "homie" in Mexican culture in California (i don't know much about Hispanics in the rest of the US), is not uncommon even outside of hip-hop fans among young whites in a similar fashion to Hispanic usage, and is so common in parts of popular culture, especially rap and other black music that's crossed over to the white market, that it's not surprising it's become common in the same way many black speech patterns got adopted by white youth culture. to try to eliminate that word in all its cultural manifestations is goofy. should it be banned as a slur? ABSOLUTELY. should it be eliminated from the joke usage "n***a, please'? i don't think so...that's a usage that's become so mainstreamed as a black-accepted usage that IMO it's OK unless it's uttered by someone with clearly hateful intent.

I think most black people would disagree with you re: it's acceptability when used by white people and in white culture, regardless of context.

You don't have any fucking idea where I grew up and who I hung around with. In my experience, the black people I have interacted with have a big fucking problem with white people using that word, even innocuously. I said "I think" because I am extrapolating my experience out to a large set of black people, even though I have no direct knowledge of their feelings on the matter. Stop thinking you're such a better fucking authority on everything than the people you're arguing with. It's patronizing and counter-productive.

According to my very white friend who just attended a jay-z/kanye west show in NC a couple of month ago, not a single African-American person within an earshot of him opposed his usage of the aforementioned colloquialism when used in a singalong context. :idk:

This is my only experience with this word other than my African-American friend in college who taught me to correctly use the expression "n***a dang!"

My weekly George Soros newsletter hasn't come in yet, so I don't have any opinion.

I was "allowed" to say it without getting chin-checked,too. But it's not allowed here, says Tom. And I respect the board, its mods, and administrator enough to not use it. Not that I really do anyway. The dudes that gave me license to say "it" were referred to as "My nipple" instead. "Cause everybody likes those :animal:

Personally I love your nipples.

I think its funny how the "stop bitching about the mods" thread somehow continued the arguments that inspired this thread in the first place.

well, here's the thing: obviously, Tom has the right to run things however he wants. my personal belief, about the world in general as well as about forums, is that one of the things that's screwing everything up is that people believe they have the right not to be offended and therefore they can restrict the rest of the world to fit their straitened moral framework. sometimes it's a religious framework, sometimes it's a political ideology, and sometimes it's the secular libertinism of European post-modernism. but it always ends up being a reductive bummer, and i think that tendency should be discouraged. i would rather have to deal with being trolled than have an environment in which things were overly sanitized for my protection. but, of course, that's just me.

ILF-where threads are run through delay pedals. infinitely repeating/self oscillating. Good point IFLAT. Rules are rules. They're not likely to change. So-the dead horse has been beaten back to life. Let's move on?
