Love this thread (since HC days)...never posted in it until now.
Picked up a '73 Ampeg V2, all stock. Have some basic tech questions and notice a lot of electronics guys post here. Doom/Stoner guys know Ampegs
While I'm used to playing inside Fender and Marshall circuits...this Ampeg is a bit different.
Would love to pm somebody if possible.

DOS, I've been looking since last night, and unless we custom order 6 50ft x 54" rolls its not available. But looking at that pic you posted I'm thinking its actually painted green, then has weed leaf stencils over top, and then clear over all of it.

Do you listen to Mono?

Anyway, now I want an amp covered in weed leaf vinyde.

...

Anyone know where I could snag such a thing?
Absolutely. There's probably a few things I listen to that do this, it's just not something I've learned to identify from the sound alone.

Possibly, though I *think* that Matamp UK had ordered it to fill an order for some unknown-to-me reggae band(s).

Of course, I'd need another head in order to get on that tolex.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE!

I love that the first thing you did was to go research custom leaf tolex.
"Man, that's so tacky....where can I get some?!"

Dude its killing me. I have a bunch of stuff listed I really need to offload. No bites yet. I didn't think my prices were too high. But the fact I'm in Oz is probably killing it for me. Also there aren't many down under ILFers.

Welcome Toetags! :doom:
I know not about the entrails of Ampegs, sorry dude. There are others though...

Yeah, it can also be difficult to sniff out because the type of distortion is so variable.

Generally it sounds like a giant washed out wave of whatever stompbox you're throwing on. Mono uses/used it a lot with their big climactic bits, and although I'm not sure if they use it a lot of Wolves In The Throne Room's earlier stuff (especially Two Hunters) sounds like it.

I wish I could give you some more specific clips, but I haven't listened to either band very recently--despite them being my go-to examples.

So I'm looking to update my rig to be more doom oriented. Hoping to get some advice. I currently have a gk bl600 going into a genz benz 410 with eminence drivers. I found an amp and cab on cl that looks appealing. It's a acoustic 270 & 204 cab. Ive seen a couple references to this amp but what I want to know is if it's worth trading mine for.

From the ad:
"This is an Acoustic 270 top (235 watts @ 2.4 Ohms, 5% THD and 340 watts @ 1.2 Ohms) with a 204 bottom (4 12" original speakers) that I bought in 1973. I good condition."

Yep got it about a month ago.
New to synths, haven't been able to play it loud through my amps/cabs yet... But I've messed around with it quite a bit and it sounds so cool.
I got it in a trade, I was in a "I want to learn something new" mood haha.

If you're prepared to spend a fair bit of money to keep it working, then yeah.

i wasn't really involved with WITTR very much for those first two albums, and have no idea what rick was doing when he was in the band, but nathan in general does reverb after dirt on his main amp and also runs a second amp, a twin reverb for the past few years, with no dirt on it at all but a shitload of verb and delay. like a clean ambient wash under the main sound, which i think accounts for what you're hearing. although i don't know what happened in the studio, but i know there's usually a shitload of guitar tracks. there are others who know more about this than me.

that amp is fucking awesome, as far as solid state goes. i particularly love acoustic amps for bass, which is what it seems you're looking for. mostly the 350/70 and the 450/70. although that one would be cool too. don't know shit about those cabs. seems more like a guitar cab. i'd way rather have an acoustic head that a gk backline, but i'm not sure how that pans out monetarily.

I'm weird like that hahaha It was more out of the curiosity of how hard it was to get custom tolex / vinyde. Which apparently is pretty tough.
