5150 amps are really awesome amps. They get lumped into the metalcore genre and people think that is all they are capable of. The other guitarist in the band uses one and gets some of the heaviest tones with it and a Revelation. My old band toured with Quiet Hands and Wayne used one with nothing but an El Capistan and a Volume pedal and it was some of the best tones I have ever heard. Clean to mid gain to full on, it all sounded great. I'm sure there are lots of amps that might do doom and stoner rock better, but a 5150 will certainly get you in the same territory as well.

So Guys, no solid deals yet but it looks like I found a place to live, that has room for all my amps and cabs. In fact its so big I could make more too haha
Nice one, mate! Do you think you'll ever be able to work on your hobby and passion in your new place in the future?
AxAxSxS wrote:You guys are killing me with awesome again. That's what I like to see. I'm not going to quote everything but, whisk, thats fucking sweet. Those cabs are freaking beautiful and look stunning up close.
K100's I have a bunch. I like em best in an x pattern with a more smooth and mellow sounding speaker. They are very clear and can get a bit harsh if the amp and eq has to much high end it'll translate it to the sound bigtime. If your amp is known for being dark it can be great but if it's known for being bright you might want to mix in something else or skip them. In other words if you find yourself turning down the treble on the amp, not great, if you find yourself turning down the bass and adding treble boosters you might love them. I LIKE THEM. I just think its something that will work well in some setups and not so much in others.
I'm forgetting some cool shit. Oh yeah, Summit rules, good looking out. and some other stuff thats rad but I'm tired and dronked.
They're great with Matamps for that reason. Same goes for Hot 100's.

I think the 5150 combos are only 60 watts. I'm not sure as I've never played through one myself but I hear a lot of people talk about them being built and sounding different than the 120 watt heads. The original blockhead ones are being sold used for around $400 - $500 now. That being said, you can find the old Butchers sometimes for less than that and those things are killer. Kinda like a JCM800.

Co-sign on that Sovtek--those heads are awesome. If I could afford it I'd buy another one.

I fixed one up for Tom in Sea of Bones and he has yet to break it. Definitely a sign they are built pretty well. Good sized PT, small sized OT..wtF!

i'm pretty sure conky's right that the 5150 combos are only 60 watts. and there are some other circuit variations. i can't remember the details, but it's not quite the same as the heads. i played a 5150 head for years. i really like those amps. they are very sensitive to the tubes you put in them. not like they'll break, but some tubes will sound good and others will sound just really really good. mine had some cheap chinese tubes in it when i bought it that sounded fucking killer. they lasted almost six years too. people would always ask me if i had it modded and say it was the best sounding 5150 they ever heard. particularly when other bands would borrow it. it was awesome. i should have just gotten more of those chinese tubes when i had it retubed, but i kept thinking i was going to get nicer ones and it would sound better. i never got it to sound that good again.
i always thought those cleans were a little "cold" sounding, if that makes sense. it worked really well for what i was doing at the time and i loved it. the gain is fucking killer, particularly if you don't dial it in like an asshole. i think if i was looking for a straight pedal platform, i'd go with the sovtek. that's a great amp for a great price. obviously this one needs some tinkering on the high input, but i bet that's not a big deal. my bandmate has one that's been modded to take el34's. it's amazing. best sovtek i've heard. i don't know why people don't do stuff like that with them more. i think his has new trannies too, or at least an upgraded output trannie.

Some of those STOCK Chinese tubes are perfectly suited to certain amps. Fryette amps use tubes that bootweek snobs would sneer at. Folks have bought Deliverance and Pit Bull amps and swapped out the old tubes because they're 'stock' and because they're 'cheap' with expensive replacements, and then bitched to Fryette about why their amps suck balls. Their reply is always the same: Don't fuck with what was fine in the first place. They choose those specific tubes for a reason, not just to save a quick buck. So, yeah, Parker, I totally can see why your 5150 sounded awesome with stock tubes. A design that's perfect to begin with shouldn't need any tweaking. Leave that shit alone and just play.
