i wouldnt suggest putting in 6550s or Kt88s into a Marshall. The PT is not equipped to handle the extra power they could deliver. Its akin to dropping a porsche motor into a honda and doing nothing else. Shit is going to run neutered or break if u try to run it hard

if u wanna do bass your going to need 200W and some efficient ass cabs

jwojtysiak wrote:Someone point me in a good direction for a power amp for guitar for the Verellen Meatsmoke pedal i'll be receiving soon.

Short list is VHT/Fryette 2 90 2, Mesa 2 90, Marshall Monobloc 9100/9200 or EL34 50/50 EL34 100/100.

Anyone ever mod the Marshalls? Would KT88/6550 fit in them? Is there a good power amp that would also work for bass also?

Playing some heavy doom/stoner stuff.

It will be powering a VHT Fatbottom 4x12 and a Emperor 2x12 with weber 65's.

Any and all opinions would be great.

Thanks!

I can only say that the Fryette power amps are amazing. They are clean and transparent, but still add distinguishable tube characteristics. I believe there are some new ones coming out soon.

Has anyone seen that Traynor are making 100 YBA-1 reissues? They've added in a stupid attenuator, but they're apparently affordable and true to the originals.

I was more referencing the "efficient cabs" in your statement  I do agree though that your gonna need atleast 200w tube / 800w SS to hang with full stacks.

The bass would be a completely different set up. Using an Ampeg SVT Classic right now into a 8x10 Classic cab. The head just took a shit so instead of taking it to the shop again might just go with a power amp and the Meatsmoke into the 8x10. It looks like the tube power amps for bass are, eh.

Do you know anything about the Marshall specs? Would the KT88/6550 fit in there?

Thanks.

I know a lot about the Marshalls. Its an already underspecced PT for EL34s in all their amps. 88s will "fit" but hardly be appropriate. Their isnt enough PT secondary current to actually bias them properly to 60 to 70% of the 42W diss rating and the added sag will only lower the plate voltage. It kind of shoots the whole reason you put them into the amp.

it will still run and play and might sound good but its not a worthwhile thing to do. Like i said its like dropping in a porsche engine into a honda civic. Sure there is all this potential for a ton of extra horse but the rest of the entire car is not design to use it so its kind of useless.

Got it. Sorry read your first post incorrect, thought you said you "would" put them in there. Makes sense. Thanks.

yea sorry man. Crohny runs 6550s in his Marshall SL reissue. It was standard practice back in the day to put 6550s in American shipped Marshalls because EL34s were harder to get in the States and it was a matter of $$$ but like I said little is gained from doing this. You can try it and you may like the way it sounds but its not going to pull any significant extra power.

auto wah or real wah?

any one ever had an auto wah? specifically im looking at the mad professor snow white wah.

The Mad Professor is a cool pedal, but a real wah, if you need that annoying sound, is the way to go. Or you could get something much better like a Subdecay Proteus or Prometheus. It cops auto wah sounds, but it does a shit-tonne of other stuff, too.

That Prometheus is TITZ! Do want but not really for the wah sounds. Want those whacked out PLL tones.

I've never really bonded with wah pedals, esp not a fan of auto wah. Ugh. Manual treadle style is how I'd roll.
