It's really all about what your looking for. A Duncan Distortion will give you that classic heavy / doom tones, from Neurosis to Electric Wizard. While a Warpig can do that in its lower gain humbucker mode (I can't remember if its the series or parallel setting) perfectly or it can do modern high gain crunch and grit (the other of the two modes) If your going to be putting in a three way toggle I think having something that in one mode gives you that DD tone while another gives you even more of a boost would be better in a single pickup guitar. If you went with the DD in the same setup you'd be maxxed out at the hottest setting of the DD and would only be able to go lower.

I run Lace Alumitones in Red.
the Bridge is actually the "deathbucker" higher output pickup and the bridge is their normal humbucker version. I have them wired to the faux-slit coil thing with a push-pull pot. They aren't quite split coiling, the website sort of describes it, but i sort of just skimmed over it.
Any way, What i can say about these pickups:
I personally love them, and I think I've sung their praises previously. I don't know that they would be for everyone. They have a very Flat EQ response. I personally love this, because they don;t color the sound too much. I have bareknuckle nailbombs in another guitar, and personally, I like the Lace pickups even more. The BKPs were dark and I constantly had to try to overcome this with the EQ on my pedals and amp.
With the alumitones, the whole "your guitar sounds like your guitar" thing is present. It made me more pleased with the ability to dial in a sound i liked. They seem to make every EQ on every pedal more responsive because they do so little coloring of their own.
My two cents.

Nitro Hemi and a Drop n Gain. I can't compare as I've never had the pleasure of using Bareknuckles. I had intended on using them in my build but after discussing my budget and desired tones with Brent, he recommended those pups and it sounds great for me. I also can't comment on splitting as I've got mine wired in the standard way. (although I'd love to try them in that configuration).

yeah man i talked to him on facebook, and the A8 pickup sounds really good and his a really cool guy...but the price was way out of my price range for the guitar i want to put it in.
conky wrote:Ancient Astronaught wrote:The BKP Warpig as a single pickup in a guitar can be wired series / single / parallel which equates to moderate / low / high output and sounds absolutely killer with any dirt while somehow still having amazing cleans despite its insanely high output. I have no experience with any lace products though, and its hard to go wrong with a Duncan Distortion.

I've heard great things about BKP...being in the UK, you hear a lot about them, and nothing but great things. But, like you Conky, i have never personally tried them...but would say that if skip says their good...you would have to try it out!
I'm looking to put new pups in my LP...but i cant justify spending BKP prices...as mine is an Epi not a Gibbi...but, Duncan Distortion has always interested me. My only concern on them is, are they known for clarity? or should i just get some humbucker sized P90's...
I don't think you'd be disappointed in the clarity out of a set of Duncans, especially when you find that sweet spot on the pickup height. Not a lot of cash and if you decided to sell it I'm sure you could get your money back out of it.
cool man, in the same price range there is also a local builder who does A8 humbuckers as well...just gotta decide on which one.
as far as pickup height, i try and keep my pickups really low so i don't kill off string sustain and also soften up the pick attack cause i really hit the strings hard.

Pretty much spot on as how I would describe them. I have the deathbuckers in several guitars now as well as the P90 riffian version in the new one I just refinished and reshaped. The 90 versions does seem to have a bit of a smooth growl to it but the normal ones just express the sound of the guitar. Even the Hemi that I have sounds fairly clear but the alumitones do it better in my experiance.

i just read so many pages here. i have not been doing internet for a little bit. i've had a lot going on, particularly with loosing my dog and i've really needed to be focused on real life and not engaging in too many distractions. that being said, i really appreciate everyone's thoughtful comments in the thread i made about my dog. i've been catching up there too and it's been nice. i ran away to the desert for a few days to get away and process things and just got back late last night.
anyway, far too much content to really comment on and catch up with, but conky, will (humancertainty) has two monson doomsayers. one is definitely walnut and i believe the other is mahogany, so he would be in a uniquely good position to comment on your question. perhaps he will chime in. or maybe you could pm him or something.
also, i love duncan distortions. i think they're awesome and i'd take them over a lot of the boutique options. that being said, if i was going to get a custom guitar, which i kind of want to do, i would probably take the opportunity to get some custom pickups. particularly since you have a good dude for it so close by. seems like you could really work with him and maybe go try out some of his stuff in person.
also, i love blasting the shit out of the low input on my amp. that's how i usually run it. however, i have found that certain pedals just really scream when you give them a little dirtier platform to go into. i'm thinking mostly of the revelation here. what a killer sound that was. sounded great in the low input but it really opened up when i put it in the high input and gave the amp a bit more hair. but if i had a sovtek with a broken high input, i don't think i would miss it. our other guitar player has one and runs a supercollider into the low and it sounds awesome.

Will's guitar on the Monson site is the one that got me wanting a Doomsayer. His is #3 I believe, the one pickup version. I used to have an SG with one pickup that was coil tapped and it got a bunch of different tones with that setup so I figured I'd go that route this time too. I rarely use the neck pickup anyway so it almost seems like a waste. Toying with the idea of getting a custom guitar made, I figured I'd got totally custom and try to get a design that he hasn't made yet. Basically I want the top half of the Doomsayer and the bottom half of the Redemption. I think it'd look cool.
I'd wanna have the top bout beveled a little more like an SG so its more comfortable for my right forearm but that's about what I want shape wise. What do you guys think? I want it to look cool, but mostly I want functionality.

I would dig to build with 1 bridge pup with 3 controls, Vol, Tone, and a 3 way rotary for series, split, and parallel (3 different output levels). But like Skip mentioned you might wanna get a hi-res pickup to get the most use out of those mods. Something like a 20k wind, so at split you get 10k single coil, and parallel you get 5k HB. Of course magnetic type is also going to dictate stuff (Ceramic, A3, A5, A8 ect ect)

just checked the monson sight. will has both number one and number three. or at least used to unless he sold one, which seems incredibly unlikely.
i think the doomsayer and the redemption are two of his coolest designs. i've really struggled with the idea of getting in touch with him for a guitar. i've had the pleasure of playing a couple of them and they're amazing. he seems like a cool guy too. my hesitation is that i think his designs may just be too out there for me. i really like classic shapes and have never been much of a pointy guitar guy. he won't copy other guitar shapes and pointy is really his specialty. it almost seems like it would be a bit weird, or the wrong fit to get in touch with him and try and get him to make a more conventional shape. i do think some of his guitars look cool, and i like pointy guitars on other people, it's just hard to see myself playing one.

Same here, my fav shapes of his are the shifter and nomad (which are like a modified LP) and the pale horse and harvester (which look like a modded explorer). I like his V shapes alot too, I'd rock a Ravenous if it didn't have those cut outs on the side and the horns were symmetrical.

If I got another one I'd probably go for the Pale Horse (kinda RD-ish), but I'd see if he could add an inch or two to the total body size because most guitars look like toys on me.

I know your pain bro, I love the doomsayer but it even looks kinda small on will and while he's tall like me he's half my weight hahaha
