man, that looks great...good job on that guitar. You really made it look like something very distinct and unique.

So, the other day Premier Guitar had a Rig Rundown on QOTSA, and apparently they don't like their gear to be publicised...i'm sure he has his reasons...but really its not his gear that makes him sound the way he does, its what he plays. So showing some pedals and amps isn't going to give away big secrets, unless you play exactly the same stuff with the same picking and strumming style...right????

I just thought that was weird for someone at that level being so secretive about his gear...?

Josh Homme has been that way for many many moons. I believe it's just that he doesn't want people to think the secret is in his gear, because its not. It's all in his fingers. It really is how he plays and writes songs. When you start worshipping someone because of their gear you inherently think less about their ability.

yeah very true...and if thats the reason that makes sense.

i really like watching rig-rundowns, mainly because you just learn stuff and i find it interesting to see how differently people approach gear and sounds. the way i see it is...i don't want to sound like Josh Homme, but i would like to know how he thinks about gear and thus the stuff that he uses and how...mainly from an education perspective.

I know of some people (including myself a number of years ago) who think that if you get the exact same gear you will sound exactly like your guitar hero...but i also met a guy who played in a metallica covers band, and he sounded exactly like kirk...but played a very very different set up - SG, Marshall and Boss pedals..."proof is in the pudding" as they say!

Yup, theres more then one way to skin a cat. :thumb:

His gear is out there though, if you wanna know what he uses (or "used" for a long time). Ampeg VT-40's with all knobs maxxed and a Stone deaf PDF-1 is his core dirt sound and is fairly constant through all his QOTSA recordings. All though I believe he recently switched to some high end custom made amps with red tolex.

Question I got offered a Reeves Cp504 how different is that from an original dr504? Is there no good new hiwatts going on?

Reeves is the closest you can get to a vintage hiwatt, he was one of the original designer / builders and started building them on his own after the ownership of the HiWatt name came into question.

the CP103 or 504 (100W vs 50W) were actually modified Sound City designs that Townshend used in the late 60s which eventually did become Hiwatts (when Reeves founded the company) produced for Pete. They are different EQ and circuit then the usual DR103 circuit.

Hmm that sounds interesting because I've been lusting at a sound city 50 plus ever since I played one. The thing I would be a trade for my mid 70s or120. I could just sell it and mod a cheaper sound city into dr504 specs. It's interesting that there are three facets of hiwatt now. Reeves, hiwatt uk, and music ground hiwatt.

I'd like lower wattage so I can just slave the bastard when I'm not playing math rock/noise.

Reeves techincally has nothing to do with the Reeves family, the guy just decided to call his amps Reeves. There is only 1 Hiwatt company that is officially related to the Reeves family, that is Hi-Tone
