i was living in mexicantown, right near the bridge to canada. it was decent, bust my ex and i still had our car windows smashed 4 times - 3 were in the winter so most likely someone just trying to keep warm, the other time probably just a crackhead looking for change. there were parts of the city i really liked (SLOW'S BBQ YES) and ann arbor is very nice as well, but on a whole i really just didn't jive with the place... oh well
i havent eaten at a place in mexicantown yet cuz im still kinda new, but yea, it's a rough spot. maybe not 8-9 years ago i guess. but everywhere in the detroit city limits is rough right now, except for some very very few (and small) areas that have been taken over by corporations in downtown/midtown and they import their workforce...for tax reasons i suppose.
other much safer areas, and generally very safe - ferndale, royal oak, farmington hills...some parts of oakland country are really nice, but this is just metro detroit.
ferndale is 9 mile royal oak is 11 mile
so we are talkin a ways out.
and you can go a couple miles east or west of the safe areas, and youre in some potentially hairyness

i did go to school with her. we had some classes together, she was good friends with a few of my good friends and she even sat in on vocals at a show with one of my old bands - think i have a minidisc of it somewhere, though to be perfectly honest it wasn't very good. nothing against her, we were a tortoise-ish band that did 90% improvisation at shows.
was it ratsliveonnoevilstar? i remember it was listed on what.cd as a minidisc source. ill admit i had to search my utorrent folder to get the name exactly right

Last time I was in Ferndale I couldn't help but think that it was filled with upper class white people.
Also mexicantown has some wonderful food, you really should check it out.

oh yeah ill get there before long.
ferndale is mostly middle class/upper middle class, with a whole lotta homosexuals. which is fine, but it's a fact. but a lotta ppl, especially musicians, either live or party on the reg in ferndale
but the side of ferndale northeast side of 9 and woodward has the nicest houses.
and there are really nice houses between taht area and oak park, oak park is the old school jewish area, so theres that.
the craziest thing is the beautiful, huge victorians in the boston edison neighborhood that is totally surrounded by urban destruction, somewhere around 6 mile or 7, im not sure, i aint from here
