something about not being white and loving fuzz and noise --

Post by htsamurai »

so stupid, because of my skin color and where I grew up it's weird that I play in the kind of bands I play in and listen to Boris and Electric Wizard --'
I mean....yeah I have been known to bump Thugs, Pac and Biggie on a regular basis and hit up the hood parties, but somehow that is in opposition to my use of proper grammar and love of a wall of noise and lots of "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSHSHSHSHHSHHBEEEEEELEEEEPBOOOPP BOOM BOOM BOOM SHHHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSSHHSHHHHHHH" between songs
I was at a show the other day sharing drinks with some cool local rappers chattin it up about beats and rhymes but as soon as my buddy walked up, wearing tight jeans, an orange plastic belt, a band shirt, and woman's pea coat on his semi-fro-havin, unshaven, 5'6 self, they gave me weird looks and got weird with me. Not down for that.
It also doesn't help that a regular outfit for me is a pair of dress pants, nikes, artsy or jazz shirt and jacket
this seems to stand in opposition to both factions, who both take offense when I play classical guitar, jazz chords or flamenco rhythms
*sigh*
I guess I'm just mad and needing to rant somewhere, where better than ILF? --'

Well, I'm pretty white. But I think I understand where you're coming from. Pretty much anything I like seems wowed to one group or another. I guess I listen to mostly "white" music ( and don't anybody tell me that music isn't racially segregated) now that o think of it. But I do love me some mowtown and Alicia keys.

If you want to feel really weird, try pounding some drum and bass at my old high school.

"FAG!"
the shouts were almst deafening.

I'm pretty sure that Boris isn't white.

But yeah, that was just me being sarcastic. I hear what you're saying. It's funny how music gets sucked into identity politics, whether it's racial or socio-economic or whatever. And let's not even get into high school. Back then I was into Primus, and both the country kids AND the burnouts thought I was nuts.

The race thing can be kind of interesting. I remember showing an old drummer of mine Scratch, the documentary about DJing and DJ culture a few years back. He was a good guy, but I always thought kind of sheltered. After we watched the movie I asked him what he thought, and he said "Wow - I didn't know hip-hop was so... multicultural..." I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

when i was younger and went to shows alot, me and my friends were always excited to see some diversity in the bands and audience. i hate that rock, metal, and experimental music is predominantly white, and i feel like musical genres cannot be fully explored unless everyone is involved.

plus you get tired of seeing white people all the time, we can be a boring lot. :)

Whether they listen to sonic youth or justin bieber my friends tend to accept my vast musical interests and appreciate it for what it is. If someone doesn't I don't waste my time talking to them. I find its better to base my friendships of sense of humor because if they can take a joke they usually can take noise whether they find it comedic entertaining or therapeutic entertaining.

Ok, lemme say this then. I do have a good amount of good friends who appreciate and respect what I do and love, or, at the very least, put up with me
it's just like meeting new people or talking to folks I used to know or grew up with, lots of times they seem offended that I would rather spend $15 on a show than on "mah boi's new album droppin on the 12th dawg, iz da illest shit ya urr hurd!"

Five artists I really like right now:
1) P-Funk
2) TV On the Radio
3) Primus
4) The xx
5) Dream Theater

Somehow I'm not aloud to list my three favorite genres as Funk/House, Prog Metal, and Indy Folk without being branded a wierdo...

I dont think its really all about being black or white or puerto rican or whatever. Most of the time people who give a shit about ANYTHING other than football and nickleback and ford mustangs and real world road rules are labeled outcasts by the majority. I guess ive always looked it the other way around. In hikeschool anyone who actually enjoyed creed was a fucking "faggot" in my eyes.

Have to say Ruben I totally agree with you, although in my case it's less about race and more about, idk clique? Or maybe it is about race, I don't know... At my school (which, at this age, is my entire social life) there are too many white people trying to act black to really base anything off race, but it seems like in general, the black people like the "black" music, the white people like the "black" music and some whiter stuff like whatever is popular nowadays, the hispanics like the "black" music and the hispanic music, the emo/goth/dark kids listen to, well, death metal, and the asians all listen to electronica. If you even mention Led Zeppelin, The Who, well, any classic rock for that matter, or blues (new or old), or jazz, or classical, or anything that one of the cliques don't listen to... well god help you you're a social outcast. It's pretty ridiculous how closed-minded and segregated everything is. In fact, it's much more than music... the grades you get, the clothes you wear, the people you hang out with (and the people you are attracted to), hell, every fibre of your being is defined, either by your race or some other factor that makes you "different" than everyone else. Fuck that. This is gonna sound mad cheesy but why can't we all just get along? I don't give a shit if your black or white or asian, so why should you?

IDK, maybe it's all in my head. If I've said anything wrong here just tell me :idk:

When I was in public school [for the sort time I was] I saw and experienced the same shit. And the school I went to in AZ was almost all white and the stereotypes were still there: are you a jock? here is some hiphop, are you a rebel? here is some slayer, Oh you don't fit into either of those groups well then prepare to get it from all sides. I think all my "friends" and I in school hung out more to stay in a group for protection out side of classes then that we ever really liked one another.

I lasted up to 7th grade intill my operants pulled me out of school do to depression and home schooled me [kind'a :p ] When I was 18 I went to Seattle Central Community Collage passed the entrance exams without any probs and got a AAS degree, I had a 4.0 average and made the President's list while I was there.

More on the SAH.
I very rarely feel I even fit in anywhere, there are people I connect with and those I don't. More over I don't want to fit in. I like that no one I know dresses like me and listens to all the stuff I listen to, that way you can turn people on [and you can be turned on to as well] things they normally aren't aware of, it makes things more fun, if someone doesn't get it they just don't, no prob, and if someone has a prob it's theirs not yours.

Mudfuzz, sometimes I kinda wish I was homeschooled so I wouldn't have to deal with all the bullshit. Then again, I'm a very social person, and all of my social interaction with other humans is at school, or with friends I've made (at school). Also, my school has some bangin' courses... :P Now I'm just rambling but yeah, you definitely got it right bro. Togetherness and a sense of community is one thing but what western society has boiled down to is literally a bigass herd of sheep. I wonder if it's any better in Europe? It's a bit better in Canada than it is in the US, I know that.
