I like flatwounds to get maximum thump, but I know I miss getting the grind and attack with rounds. Pick or fingers is really about feel to me. Sometimes it feels right to groove on a jazz ballad with a pick, playing softly, digging in when the song needs it, not playing when it's needed. Other times I have to ride that root with fingers, for 5 minutes, quarter notes. I'm serving the fucking song.
It's not that I prefer pick over fingers as a general rule, it's just that the music I play generally calls for a very sharp, aggressive attack that just doesnt' sound right for me when I'm playing fingerstyle. We don't play any jazz, or really any ballads at all, of any style. It's all aggressive, heavy music. Like you said, serving the fucking song.

And Mike Watt is a fuckin boss.

What I am wondering lately is, do people really need effects? And do tuners count as effects?

I was filling-in on a corporate wedding praise worship gig like I do sometimes and I unpacked my tuner and the Band Leader just gave me the evil eye. I mean, really gave me a sour look. I tried to explain that since this gig was outdoors that I was afraid the bass might get out of tune easier. The band leader told me that bass players that bring effects to gigs don't last and he also told me that there isn't any money below the 5th fret…So Confused.
Help.

The only acceptable tuner is a $500 rack mount that is always on so the band leader can make sure your intonation is perfect. I would personally dock your pay $1 per microtone that you're off. Any bandleader worth a d*** would do the same.

Thanks neonblack! I needed to hear that from another bandleader.

I guess I will start saving for that rack mount tuner, it sure must be very transparent to be on all the time. That reminds me, what's everyone's favorite transparent OD?!?!?!

Full disclosure: I'm a failed guitarist who couldn't hack it, I just hide it by playing with my fingers.

There's some cool stuff happening over there, though. Or, at least, there was.

I got in shit with coworkers I played with because I used a graphic equalizer. Every bit of feedback, string noise, skipped note, missing picks, was blamed on it. Never turned it on during the jam. Meanwhile the guitarist drowned out everyone else because he didn't stop turning up. Played with them twice, never wanted to again.
Serving the song or not, it's bullshit to think that pedals and effects hide talent or lack thereof.

And I kind of like how compressors seem to be the flavour of the day over in there effects forum.

Is he not there anymore? Dude he was like the only person on TB that actually knows how to use a comp correctly. Such a misunderstood effect… and yet on every recording there is of bass pretty much…

Bongo does post there, but he is usually saying things like, "I'm bored with shitty/boring compressors", or "Check my site for a review of a circuit that is nearly identical to the one in question." He is still a cool dude, never condescending to the n00bz, but based on his replies he is tiring of reviews.

I'm not sure condescending is being used right. He is helpful but will condescend like a motherfuck while doing it.
