Stuff is more expensive because living on an island in the pacific means all the mafioso mentality you get with small town bureaucracy is allowed to go apeshit and penetrate every tier of governance, and then the island retailers take their cut.
Honestly, I think our high standard of living is also due to our geographic isolation. The only benefit about being a pain in the arse to get to is that disease and broke ass communist regimes tend to not make it across the ocean. So we don't know famine, plague, or war.
Which is awesome, but fucked if there aren't some overly privileged wankers these days as a result.

I think our economy and political climate is starting to take its toll on our culture/lifestyle, though.

But that's another story. If I get to the point of seriously considering it, I'll take a trip or two to visit first. But even that wouldn't be for a long while. Long enough to gain some lucrative skills.......
