The Fredric Effects Zombie Klone purports to be an entirely authentic clone of the Klon, including the Klon's buffer.

I check this thread every day.
I'm not really too interested in the comparison.
I really just want to know if that crazy backplate ever gets taken off.

Yeah, what are you trying to say, Ro_S?

I know that's what Tim says and I certainly believe him, but my ears tell me otherwise. It may come down to the difference in components, but they don't sound the same. Of course, it also may come down to the difference in individual pedals. I've already mentioned that the Centaur in my possession sounds better than most. So, maybe I got a Zombie Klone that's not really representative of 'em overall? :idk: I've just been reporting what I've been hearing.

I had fun comparing pedals. I thank you for taking the time to read my posts, if only for the part of the soap opera that is the backplate storyline.

I tried every day to get the backplate off. At least once a day. Sometimes more. It never came off.

I am a big wimp.

I will be sending the Soul Food to skully with the backplate unsealed. That is how it will be.

That you didn't crank the knobs on all of them and turn them all on. Today I went to a guitar center and tried out the Mad Professor 1, Golden Cello, and the TREX boost/delay thing, and that's the first thing I did. didn't sound very good, in fact, none of them did. But I did it, goddamn it.

It was definitely cool to see how things compared.
I exaggerated to try to be funny, I did enjoy seeing how it held up vs. the klon and reading your description of the sounds.

I totally get you on the backplate issue, definitely not a wimpy arms problem.
I had a pedal one time that I had to take a power drill to in order to unscrew it.
I figured it must've been put in with one and tightened down a bit too forcefully.
It could've been the same issue with the Soul Food.
The machine that put in the screw could've packed a bit too much punch, or something.

I'm gonna do that Monday, when no one is home.

It's gonna get loud and since my guitar has microphonic pickups, there's gonna be a lot of feedback.

Then I'm gonna send the Soul Food to skully.

I need to build up to a climax, right?

I can't just max all the knobs and then go back to playing with knobs unmaxxed. That would be anticlimactic.

Once the knobs have been maxxed, they can't be unmaxxed.

I've also decided that I'm try 'em using my only guitar with humbuckers, a big jazz box with mini-humbuckers. We'll hear how that goes.

I think for people who are interested in Klons, the Soul Food is a good introduction. It's cheap and, for the money, it sounds decent.

I'd never pay a stupid lot of money for a circuit like the Centaur. (I guess that's kinda relative.) Back in the day they were a little expensive when they were new, but the used prices these days are insane. I paid less for each of the ones I have than some klones sell for now. It's pretty ridiculous.

What I really need, instead of more pedals, is a drill and a vice. That way next time when I have screws I can't get out, I'll have the proper tools to remove.

Not so! First thing is to crank everything to see if you can break it or things with it, then once it is established that nothing breaks you can go about finding sounds, then once sounds have been found and noted you crank it all again play a big chord, put the guitar on the ground and walk away for a bit so that you can contemplate the meaning of the universe which is very antianticlimactic :thumb:

Microphonic pickups and three klons is going to be so rad. This is such a fun thread. Thanks for your time Chanks, and thanks Skully for being such an enabler.

OK, I'll do it your way, but something might break.

The speaker in the amp I'm using is a vintage Jensen. It might get blown. I'm fine with that though. It's on its way out anyway and needs replacing.

I have nothing but time.

You're welcome.

Ah, gotcha.

I do like the sound of the Zombie Klone. It's an adequate substitute for the real thing. It's just that it's quite a bit brighter than the Centaur (in my experience). I talked to Tim about the possibility of a Zombie with better bass response. He said he'd look into it.
