"BEATER" guitars...lets see em

defnition of Beater guitar = something you dont give a shit about and can use and abuse. cheapies with mods? partscasters slapped together? abominations of nature...
the cheaper the better.

squier Vintage modified Custom neck/15+ year old Samick Strat body from my very first electric guitar...refinished in 2pak paint, and abused/mistreated and forgotten, stored in a tin shed (aussie summer gets to around 40 deg cel) pickguard holes dont line up, bridge pickup is a from an ibanez (infinity INF4) and neck is a GFS 90. slapped together and a few tweaks here and there...and i can play just as good on this guitar as my other much nicer guitars. another tool to make some noise with! i love it!

I bought a Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster for $799 that was intended to be my beater guitar for doing extended guitar type stuff but when I got it I couldn't bring myself to hurt her.

I consider my custom shops my beaters. Yes they cost me more than my normal production guitars, but I feel like after you blow wads on a custom spec guitar that you got to your specific wants its gonna be close to impossible to flip it ever for a decent price. So I figure I should just play then into the grave.

It's true. None of my guitars were bought new. (Not technically true, I bought a brand new P-Bass once. Once.)

Although, I'd never intentionally mistreat them, I don't mind if they get beat on more than they already are.

dont get me wrong, whilst i dont "baby" my other guitars and enjoy them as tools, i still treat them with some respect. i stopped buying fancy flamed/quilted collector behind glass case guitars a long time ago because i feel i cant enjoy them as much as plainer jane models.
for a beater, i really can just drop it on the floor and be careless

my old beater guitar was this black 1990s PRS CE24. you cant tell from the pics but the finish was gigged and beat, loved the back of neck wear. i had a hard time selling it for financial reasons, and most potential buyers werent after a beat up prs, but i eventually found it a good home. wish i could afford to have kept it.

Ok, I'll play. This guitar currently has flatwounds on it and is tuned to C standard. Everything on this guitar came from trades, and the finish is rustoleum and hardware store poly spray.

I love ILF's beaters. Some crazy stuff comes from this board.

I'll have to post my beater in a couple of months. I'm currently working on it. It's an SX Furrian (Tele copy) that I got for $90.

I never really liked it. It was really uncomfortable to play. The neck was really chunky near the headstock, and was covered in this "vintage" tint that was the shade of a carrot. The finish sucked (streaks that make it look like it is a 100-piece body).

Since it was so inexpensive, I am looking at it like a toy. I'm having fun with it.

So far, I have removed the carrot color (did that a while ago). Last week, I reshaped the headstock to something more Tele-like, and scraped the neck/headstock area so it feels nice and comfortable. I'll have to figure out how to refinish it.

My plan is something I hate. I'm... ermm... umm... aging it. Not really relicing it-- I don't want it to look super old. But since it looked so cheap to begin with, I think it would look better beat up. It's a poly body, so it'll never wear naturally.

It's not like I'm ruining a good instrument. I'm just having fun. :)

At the risk of posting this too much...
This is my beater:

Which I refinished to this:

It's still roughish, still my beater and #1.
