Being the black sheep playing a show

Post by gunslinger_burrito »

So I've got a show booked in a couple-few weeks. It's a free show for the First Friday artwalk, so I'm generally stoked. However, I told the guy in my original email that I wanted to play "kind of pretty ambient music," meaning, to me, sort of mellow, shoegazey, doom-gazey stuff. Like, my best "Nadja-meets-Mogwai" impersonation. Then the dude actually organizing the show gets a hold of me and links me to the other acts (including he and his wife) who are playing. They range from mellow, semi-Portisheadish downtempo stuff to straight up dancey electronica type stuff (I have no idea how to label this music; I don't listen to it). I'm pretty sure none of the other bands are going to even have an electric guitar.

Do I try and be a bit more mellow, or do I say fuck it and play whatever the hell I want? I'll be playing first, so I don't know if I'll chase away everyone else's audience, or if I'll want to :idk:

Ambient is Ambient and if you're fist you get to set the mood so do what you do and then cash in the drink tickets and lounge... I think your stuff will work and it's for an "Art" event so anything goes, might win over some new fans of the Dark Side...

Are you gonna take some of your Art to sell cause that would totally win them over... If I were you I'd just set up some of my pieces in front of my amps and sell it as merch... :thumb:

I would do what I do normally.

The only time that I have changed/edited anything for a certain show while playing out was for a show at a county Fair (lol). We took a few cuss words out of a few songs because kids were around.

i'd say fuck it. especially braving it as the opening act. do what you want. sometimes shows need to have acts whose music fits together, sometimes it's great to make those shows have multiple different acts that don't match up at all.

link to the electronic stuff? i'm actually into a lot of that on top of weird indie acts & some metal...

also +1 on taking some art if you can. i just finally framed one of yours last night!

Nope. Try Andrew Jackson Jihad, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, early Against Me! or Defiance, Ohio.

Yeah. Just go in with your thing and if necessary. They wanted you to play, so give them your thing. If people dig it, then awesome! If not, move on to the next gig.
Have fun, dude!
