Cheap Bass VI: good VI. Get more, even if you have others!

(I'm getting another as soon as they're commonly available personally as well, and considering making a fretless one because I'm wrong in the head)

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

No way Jose. That CS rules hard!

My girl and I bought the Squier for my younger brother's combo Bday/Xmas gift this year and I'm gonna upgrade it a bit. Replacing tuners (and bushings) with gotohs, adding a US trem assembly with lock function (so u can actually adjust tension properly), adding a Staytrem bridge, new strings, oversize strap buttons, and a custom pickguard. Excited to compare it to the CS though, should be interesting.

My oly white finally shipped today, ordered from GC on August 31st. I've been sitting here with my black pearl pickguard and labella custom set like some kind of idiot for over a month now :P

Talked to my guy at Fender today, said that allegedly they were supposed to release VI strings at some point around this year but never did for whatever reason - apparently there's a part number in the system.

And confirmed the strings were supposed to be (or are, which seems about right by my ghetto comparison of feeler gauges since I don't have a micrometer here handy) as spec'd for the Squiers:

25 35 45 55 75 95

^ yep, that's the Fender VI set gauges for sure. Didn't work for me in E standard, too tight on high end too loose on low. I moved down to D standard keeping high strings almost identical and jumping up in guage drastically on the low end to 62-84-110. Feels good to go now but that's all subjective.

I just ordered a la Bella custom round set in .102 .076 .058 .044 .34 .024

That's a heavier e than on my regular bass (a .100), but from people's reviews I've read it sounds like I'll need it to drop down to D with the shorter scale.

Got one in from Sweetwater today, getting ready to upgrade most the hardware and found the first issue to address.

The nut. HOLY SHITTY NUT JOB! There's around 4-5 high frets I'll have leveled while I'm at it. Already time to utilize that Squier warranty.

Fit and finish are pretty good beyond that and build seems very solid but outta the box it feels kinda cheap and light and not nearly as resonant as the CS model (not that I expected it to compare without some work). Hoping the new nut, trem assembly, Staytrem bridge, strings, and a proper setup bring it to life and get it feeling more solid.

Oh, here's that nut. Thanks Squier!

Where'd you get your new nut, Schnikes?

And good luck with the Guitar Centar wait.
