The real story is that the flat D string wouldn't hold any tension. So rather than not have it useable I figured it would be better to just swap out the G and put the old rounds on in their place. Really need to contact Labella to see if they'll replace them. Bassstringsonline wouldn't/couldn't do it, and I really don't want to be screwed on one string alone (worth $10 too).
Any chance you can record some of that?

This is what I've got for you, Haki. Nothing special playing-wise, but it should give you a bit of an idea of the contrasts.

I do like the contrast, but I shift too little and play across the fingerboard for it ever to work for me. I also would hate the feel on my fingertips of different strings. I can't even stand having 3 dead strings and 1 new string if I break one during a gig/practice.

You the man! It does make octaves a lot more interesting. I'm going to have to do this as well, maybe I'll start using the D and G strings for a change.

This is one reason I love this place so much. I don't see this even being a question someone would consider asking here. They'd already know the answer.

Yeah, it definitely isn't for everyone. But honestly I don't really find it affecting me that much. Especially since I'm rarely doing vertical runs on the neck.

The way I tend to approach it is as two different voicings, a rhythm and lead tone. Ride the E and A for rhythm work and staying back. Jump up to the D and G for standing out or lead work.
It really works well for bass since you get octaves on E/D and A/G. So you could easily drop or raise a pair one step to essentially play the same licks with different timbres. If you were the type that did vertical runs instead of horizontally, it might sound a little uneven. There's no way I would want to limit myself to this one bass. That's why this is my back up bass.

And it doesn't really change your fingertip feel since you wouldn't be jumping back and forth that often. Maybe like verse on one pair, chorus on the other. But jumping back and forth would just sound a bit odd.
