I've been thinking about getting a new bass also though I wouldn't say I have a price limit. of course the cheaper it is the sooner I can buy it.
Right now I want something that has a thicker tone. Some balls and body to the sound. I have a jazz bass now that I love but I don't always want a jazz bass tone.
So far I like the Reverend Mercalli, Laklands, and Gibsons. On the higher end I like Roscoe, MTD, and Pedulla but those are gonna be around 1800 to 2500 used. and I feel like I might be too young to own something that nice?
feel free to suggest some stuff to me! aluminum necks have always appealed to me too

why wait? i'm a lot happier as a player now that i have a variety of quality instruments. i'd have eaten a puppy when i was 22 just to have a Strat as nice as the ones i have now or a acoustic like my Eastman.

I was mostly being facetious to see what you guys would say haha. I take pretty good care of my instruments and I wouldn't really be worried about having an investment that big

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend a G&L L-2k or L-2500. Beefy as fuck buckers, a ton of tonal options, can go active or totally passive. I have a tribute cause I'm cheap, but you should be able to go for a used USA model for under a grand. I prefer them to the two Laklands I've tried. Gibson is a totally different animal, with a totally different sound. I'll get an EB-3 someday to round out my stable.

I've played the reissues and didn't really dig how they felt. Sounded good tho. I'm sure the older ones are cool.

I've played a Dingwall and actually really didn't like the fan frets :idk: I know i'm in the minority there. the sound was good and I liked the even tension a lot.

I generally am a fan of pbasses as long as the neck isn't too fat. I've played a 70s fender P that sounded really great and round but the neck was too fat for me. I had forgotten about that, thanks for reminding me!
