I've been debating it and going back and forth. Make my mind up Doom Room. Sell my SG Standard and buy a 72 Tele Deluxe Reissue in Walnut finish or keep the SG? Yes or no? Its my backup guitar, since I mostly use my LP Custom.

that's tough...SG is very different to the LP...so its not like you are doubling up on the same tone...and the Tele is very different again...personally I'd stick with the SG, but that's mostly because I'm not a huge fan of Tele's but really like SG's.

what are you going to use the Tele for? i suspect its not going to be a back up as its so different...

Backup or main... depending on my mood. I had one of these Teles before and really with the dual humbuckers it isn't much different tonewise. The cleans sounded better but the dirt was just about the same. I just miss having a Tele, but if I got rid of it I'd want an SG again. If I sold the SG though I could still have a little extra cash to pay towards the 4WD on my Ranger to be fixed.

There's nothing like a maple fretboard tele neck, just so smooth and slick. Definitely the necks I'm fastest on. Plus its 25.5" scale so if you detune you have more intonation range and tuning stability. Add on to that that you'll have funds leftover to sink into the 4wd and its a no brainer.

anyone try a 70's or 90's OR80 combo? one in my area for sale, a 90's one, so I'm assuming it's made by Matamp. It seems pretty cool.
I'd probably just get it to jam on in my house if I had some extra cash though.

I've heard it's exactly the same as an OR120 but with two less tubes and less headroom. I have a feeling that's not true, but it could be. I read it on the Orange forums.

I always put my BAT fuzz pedals before overdrive. They sound sick boosting Fuck OD. Boost still goes first though.

Boosting a fuzz with overdrive is still cool, but BAT fuzz pedals just love kicking the shit out of other stuff. Some put harmonizers before dirt for a more pronounced sound. It's the traditional way of doing it, I think.

The 72 Deluxe guitars are consistently awesome. I have the Custom version with the single coil in the back position and the ashtray bridge. I really dig it. It's better than all the SG's I've tried in my years, but then again I've tried some shit (and expensive) SG guitars, ones with downright awful neck profiles and no spring or tone in the wood. They were just hunks of a tree with cheap metal. But the problem is, those 'Wide-Range' humbuckers may not be Wide-Range humbuckers and could be what I have: good for nothing wet blankets. I never use mine. I'll be replacing it either with an original from the 70's or probably a modern replica.

As far as comfort and playability, SG necks tend to be heavy and dip a little without a proper strap, but are arguably more comfortable overall due to the neck angle and body contours. A Tele is comfortable standing up but isn't the best when seated, especially without the straight neck angle. Tele has a rounder radius and thus may be better for chords, but has a narrower neck so if you have big hands and sausage man fingers then the SG might be better with its wider fretboard. The extra scale length, as Skip said, does help with lower tunings and doesn't feel that much different when bending or anything like that. The Maple neck and fretboard is also nice.

I'd say get the Tele.

So there are now THREE amps in Ireland I want that are within my budget.

A 1971 Simms-Watts 100 (€550)
A 1973 Orange OR120 in black (€700)
And a 70's Sound City Plus 50 (€450)

Simms Watts are killer, out of all 3 of those I would get that.

I've heard it's even louder than an Ampeg V4, on par with a Hiwatt Custom 100. I've tried an original Hiwatt and it was nuts. You get scared playing it even through my 2x12 in my small music room. It had a perceivably louder volume than a Matamp. I've also heard they use Partridge transformers and are as rugged as a Hiwatt. I'm always sceptical about buying old amps. I need something that'll last a long time, and you and everyone assure me Hiwatt are pretty much lifetime guaranteed except for caps and tubes.

yea Simms are nice, Avedissian has one of the 100Ws. Never played it in person but its got a killer fuckin rep.

OR120 on guitar is deadly though, as well on bass.

With the Sound City stuff... I'd rather go Hylight Hiwatt.

To me so far... no louder feeling amp then a Hiwatt or OR120.

Sound Cities are always rough but easy to fix and mold into great amps. They are like rough Hiwatts in general.

Since I could build an Orange behind my back (and since I like GT120s more) I would skip that one.

Simms are rarer and generally well built, better iron then the other 2.

Whats the loudest? Well I dont play bright amps which tend to appear louder when they dump some of the low end in exchange for the upper mid and highs. Simms would likely be the loudest there given that its the 100W with a somewhat brighter edge. Lol you should get a 4x12 if you wanna run it tho or some heavy heavy duty speakers in a 2x12.

I dig the looks of the Simms as well. It's really unique, like an old Laney Klipp or Super Group.

The Hiwatt felt louder than the Matamps I've tried because, probably, I was in a small enclosed room, while the Matamp factory was more open and I had to be more reserved about how hard I played someone else's guitar in someone else's workshop.

And there is actually a deal for that Simms-Watts 100. It comes with an Ampeg 2x15. The package deal is €700, one hundred Euro less than if you bought them separately if you know what I mean. I could probably swing that if I really liked the tone when and if I can try it out.

How much do Hylight DR103's go for in Ireland?

in my area, Sound City stuff goes for in and around the same price as a Hylight DR103 because they're not easy to find here.

I don't really feel like taking chances with old amps I'm not to sure on personally... I had a 71' Sunn 1200s and it constantly had problems and overall it sounded like shit (putting it lightly...)
I was super bummed about it.

old amps usually need work, most of the time people have no idea you are supposed to recap them and they think that if they are all original (like original caps) that is worth more. So if the amp has never been recapped, i generally would consider them worth a little less since you are going to have to turn around and put in all new electrolytic caps ect
