Just be careful about overdoing a build...well, I guess it depends on the games you play, but a shit-hot setup right now will be pretty good or middle of the road in a year or two; PC parts improve quickly.

Yeah that was kind of my thinking. I'd like your input on some of my more major pieces if you don't mind.

-Processor: Intel i5 4670 (figured I didn't need overclocking or hyperthreading)
-GTX770 (not top of the line but fairly close, can run just about anything current on max and as games get more demanding I'll add another for an SLI setup)
-ASRock Z87 Extreme6 motherboard (pretty good price for all of the features I think)
-16gb GSkill RipJaws 2133 mhz RAM (This I know is overkill so I'll be set for a while)
-Corsair 850W power Supply (80 Plus platinum rated, fully modular and should be plenty to run two 770's

I changed some things and got it down to 1800 without a monitor. Haven't decided on one yet. So is anything unnecessary or should I spend a little extra on something?

I haven't heard of that motherboard but everything else gets my seal of approval. It's all pretty easy and if your lucky the motherboards manual will be pretty friendly just be sure to invest in a decent case, air flow and access are important. You're going to have the clean the thing at some point and you don't want to have to take everything out just to do it.

I just put together a new machine, myself. Motherboard-wise, I'd recommend Gigabyte all day.
I am an AMD guy, though, so I went AMD Vishera 4.0GHz eight-core. I was starting to bottle-neck at my old quad-core.
Using a GeForce GTX 660 Ti (that I picked up later last year), I'm running current stuff on ultra, no problem.
I, too, am using the G-SKILL RipJaw 2x8GBs and Corsair HX850 psu. Solid product.

Yeah, when I was shopping around for the machine I built last year it was all about the Gigabyte and ASUS stuff. I ended up going with a Gigabyte as well and definitely haven't regretted it.

I'll look at Gigabyte motherboards, the motherboard is the thing I'm most unsure of.
I could save some money going AMD as well, a couple friends have had great results with their processors

For a case I was looking at the Thermaltake Chaser A31, got reviewed pretty well. Or should I just go for a full sized case for better airflow and more room?

Nice setup indeeeeeed.
Personally I would avoid AMD. Not that they can't get it done or anything, but having run with both, Intel seems to give better results. I don't think you can beat the i5/i7 jawn they have going on right now. Some games are just better optimized for Intel processors, as well. I'd have fps issues and stuff on games that my last AMD CPU should have performed flawlessly with, but after going with an i5 it's been trouble free.

I had to chop away part of the case near the front fan mount to fit a wider high-output fan in, but I was also really paranoid about cooling because I had just gotten a GTX480, where the normal operating temperature can get to levels that would be dangerous for the cards I was used to. I don't think you'll have problems with airflow. I'd stay away from bigass full tower cases.

I've been using AMD based systems for years and have never had a problem.
Some games are optimized for intel, some for amd. Some are optimized for ati, most for nvidia. Such is the landscape.
Also, imma go ahead and drop Rosewill cases in the discussion.

Me personally I don't play a lot of super hi tech games that push systems. If you're the same maybe you could invest money in other things such as a very nice monitor or nice keyboard and mice and headset. building a computer that will run most games well isn't that expensive

As far as other uses for this computer I will also be doing Photoshop/InDesign stuff along with some web design work. Obviously it will be my recording workstation as well. Might try my hand in some video editing too as my roomates can't seem to find time to finish the music video they shot for me.

As far as monitor setups I'm thinking of just a single 24" 1080p monitor but eventually I'll invest in that cheap 4k TV thats $950 on Amazon. So a setup that can run games at near max on 4k is something I'm interested in building. This is going to substitute console gaming almost entirely for me so I want to play AAA titles in all of their glory.
